Ground mobility

In October and early November, 1943, we spent full time in preparing our instruments to join the Dugway Proving Ground Mobile Field Unit of the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service in Bushnell, Florida. [Pg.87]

Surface heterogeneity may be inferred from emission studies such as those studies by de Schrijver and co-workers on P and on R adsorbed on clay minerals [197,198]. In the case of adsorbed pyrene and its derivatives, there is considerable evidence for surface mobility (on clays, metal oxides, sulfides), as from the work of Thomas [199], de Mayo and co-workers [200], Singer [201] and Stahlberg et al. The backscattered beam observed at an auxiliary telescope B meters away from the main one looks like a plume strip with an angular length (p B 8h / where 8h stands for the thickness of the sodium layer. The tilt of the wavefront at the auxiliary telescope and vibrations equally affects the plume and the NGS. Thus departures of the plume from the average NGS location is due to the only tilt on the upward laser beam. Therefore measuring this departure allows us to know the actual location of the LGS, and to derive the tdt. Because of Earth rotation and of perspective effects, the auxiliary telescope has to track the diurnal rotation, and simultaneously to move on the ground to keep aligned the NGS and the LGS plume. Adapting the system to a mobile unit involved redesigning the instrumentation for portability and mounting it into a 3 A x 5-ft steel cart. In spite of the absence of periodicity, glasses exhibit, among other things, a specific volume, interatomic distances, coordination number, and local elastic modulus comparable to those of crystals. Therefore it has been considered natural to consider amorphous lattices as nearly periodic with the disorder treated as a perturbation, oftentimes in the form of defects, so such a study is not futile. This is indeed a sensible approach, as even the crystals themselves are rarely perfect, and many of their useful mechanical and other properties are determined by the existence and mobility of some sort of defects as well as by interaction between those defects.
