Chemists communicate in a highly elaborated alfabetic [sic] and symbolic language. The chemical nomenclature is a predominant literary language. Only short names are spoken, the official, sometimes very long terms are replaced by trivial names or are uncanonically abbreviated for oral communication. The chemical nomenclature works with a distinct syntax and semantic, but is not suited for textual sentences. Structures are drawn according to specific rules. 

The sentence completion question sets in this book increase in difficulty as you practice your way through them—from easy to intermediate to advanced. These divisions may reflect how challenging the vocabulary is or how complex the sentence structure is or how challenging the logic of the sentence is.

The repetition of sentence patterns is not only boring, but in some cases, it can reduce your grade. The SAT essay, for example, is scored by readers trained to look for, and reward, variety in sentence structure. They can deduct a point or two for an essay filled with sentences that follow the same pattern. When you re editing your essay, check for monotonous sentence structure. Here s an example ... 

The edited version combines sentences and uses introductory phrases and appositives (descriptive words and phrases set off by commas) to vary sentence structure. The result is a much more engaging paragraph. 

Edit the following paragraph, replacing general words with more exact ones and creating variety in sentence structure. (Note You may also have to revise for clarity to address some of the problems in this paragraph.)... 

Wordiness and ambiguity often prevent ideas from coming across clearly. Edit your sentences to eliminate clutter and unnecessary repetition. Revise sentences that use overly informal or overused words, and exchange the passive voice for the active. Clarify ambiguous words and unclear pronoun references. Finally, improve your writing by using precise modifiers and adding variety to your sentence structure. 

Try writing some bad sentences. Use unnecessary words and repetition, jargon, pretentious words, unclear pronoun references, and ambiguous words. Avoid exact words and phrases, and repeat the same sentence structure. By trying to write poorly, you ll get a better sense of what to avoid in your writing.

Sentences Ideas come across clearly variety in sentence structure. Most ideas are clear may occasionally be wordy. In general, active verbs should be preferred. Sentence structure should be selected to avoid unnecessary punctuation. Placing the subject at the start of the sentence makes it easier for the reader to rapidly identify the information that he seeks. For instance, Post-implantation loss was increased in the treated group. is much more user-friendly than, Compared with the control group, post-implantation loss was higher in the treated group. It is not necessary to tag the clause compared with the control group to every sentence, but if it must be included, it can be placed at the end of the sentence rather than at the start. 

Bullet points are a handy method for avoiding complex sentence structure and are also convenient for the final user of the document, e.g.,... 

Throughout Silas Marner, George Eliot uses vocabulary, sentence structure, and philosophical commentary to teach her reader a moral. 

Sometimes writers use a similar sentence structure to emphasize a point or to get the reader s attention. However, using similar sentence structures over and over again in a paper bores your reader. In fact, it makes it hard to pay attention, because the sentences do not flow. Read the following paragraph for an example. 

Rewrite the following paragraph using questions and answers, different sentence lengths and different sentence structures. 

Choice d represents confused sentence structure as well as lack of agreement between subject and verb. 

The single most important key to the meaning of a sentence is its structure. The best and easiest way to determine sentence structure is to look at punctuation. Sentence completion questions always have one or more commas or semicolons. The basic strategy is to separate the sentence into units divided by punctuation. Often, one of the units will express a complete thought, and at least one unit will have one or two blanks. The unit that expresses a complete thought will tell you what the unit(s) with blank(s) need to say. 

The writer could have said, Dennis was scared. He was afraid of heights. Instead, the writer suggests how Dennis feels through details (his knees were weak), repetition twenty feet), and the short, choppy sentence structure. 

The easiest way to determine sentence structure is to use punctuation to guide you. 

As stated previously, writing the business plan is an extremely important part of business planning. The business plan should be informative and balanced in its presentation of the proposal. The document should be written with a specific audience in mind (the financial decision maker). It should be both easy to read and easy to understand and therefore must possess proper organization, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. 

Don t get put off by the third requirement. Scorers know you have just 25 minutes to write your essay, so they don t expect perfect grammar and punctuation (although it certainly won t hurt ). They will look for word choices that reflect a strong vocabulary (avoid cliches and slang), variety in sentence structure, and logical development of ideas. We ll go into greater detail about essay specifics in Chapter 3. 

From the remaining choices, eliminate any versions that make a different error, even if they correct the error in the prompt. This includes any versions that are grammatically correct but are unnecessarily wordy, ambiguous, or use unnecessarily complicated sentence structure.
