Global environmental issues importance

Energy is a key issue and is closely associated with the environment. Global environmental issues must be addressed, where the energy chain from resources to end users is of vital importance. [Pg.2]

The final chapter brings our attention back to a number of important contemporary global environmental issues. These issues were the driving force for the development of the book in the first place. We hope that this synthesis will start some of its readers on pathways that improve our understanding of biogeochemical cycles and lead us toward the resolution of these global environmental issues. [Pg.404]

The main types of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are polybromin-ated biphenyls (PBBs), PBDEs, and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). PBDEs have replaced PBBs, which are the first brominated organic compounds to be used as flame retardants and were phased out because of environmental issues, but are now being replaced by TBBPA (Renner, 2000). The global consumption of BFRs is estimated to be 203425 tons in 1999 with PBDEs accounting for 33% (Fig. 2.10). Deca-BDEs, 82% of total PBDEs, are the most widely used product. Domestic BFR consumption in South Korea in 2002 was 49050 tons, of which 25% (i.e., 12408 tons) was PBDEs with deca-BDE accounting for 12324 tons and penta- and octa-BDEs accounting for 84 tons (KMOE, 2005c). Imported amounts of each product in 2003 showed a similar distribution to the consumption estimated in 2002 (Fig. 2.10). In BFR market of Western Europe, consumption of PBDEs has declined from 26% in 1996 to 11% in 1998 (DEPA, 1999). Penta-BDEs product has been restricted for over one decade and is now banned within Europe. Furthermore, there has... [Pg.74]

The choice of the values of X and Y, which have long-term consequences, requires consideration of the conflicting problems of sustainable national economy and world environmental threat. The economy issues stem from such needs as the increase in electricity supply and the reduction of petroleum import. The environmental issues stem from such desires as the abatement of global emission of greenhouse gases and local emission of smog-forming vehicle exhaust. [Pg.323]

These pathways-level models have two key advantages. First, they generally provide a better basis for extrapolation than global models because of their chemical richness. Second, and perhaps trivially obvious, they are fashioned to answer new questions concerning product quality and properties. For example, as environmental issues dictate the allowable aromatics content of gasoline, it is important to have models which can specify, e.g., the benzene content. [Pg.291]

Acidic deposition alters soils, stresses forest vegetation, acidifies lakes and streams, and harms fish and other aquatic life. These effects can alter important ecosystem services such as forest productivity and water quality. Decades of acidic deposition have also made many ecosystems more sensitive to continuing pollution. Moreover, the same pollutants that cause acidic deposition contribute to a wide array of other important environmental issues at local, regional, and global scales (see Table 3.1). [Pg.34]

VOCs, which are present mainly in the gas phase, play important roles in a range of environmental issues. These important roles involve their global greenhouse effect, their toxic or carcinogenic human health effects, their accumulation and persistence in the environment, and their role in secondary aerosol formation. The definition of VOC is often very diffuse. In physicochemical terms, the term VOC refers to those organic compounds that are present in the atmosphere... [Pg.167]

In recent decades, humans have become a very important force in the earth system, demonstrating that emissions and land use change are the cause of many of our environmental issues. These emissions are responsible for the major global reorganizations of biogeochemical cycles. With humans as part of nature and the evolution of a man-made changed earth s system, we also have to accept that we are unable to remove the present system into a preindustrial or even prehuman state because this means disestablishing humans. The key question is which parameters of the... [Pg.238]

Secondly, as another important issue, we have to think of global environmental problems. I am of opinion that the environmental protection should have the highest priority over all our activities as our business norm of utmost importance. This means that we have to prepare ourselves for incessantly increasing expenditures for R D and facility investments in improving environmental performances. [Pg.39]

The most important emissions considered in the power generation industry, due to their effects on the environment, are SO2, CO2 and NOx which are computed based on each scenario simulatioa The effects of electric power generation systems activities on the climate changes, human health and environmental issues can be mentioned as a significant cost imposed on global community. In this section, the penalty cost modeling of the emission production in each scenario is computed as following equation. [Pg.332]

The global warming is probably one of the most important environmental issues for this century. Every day there is new evidence of the climate change, but perhaps all this evidence is still not totally verified. However it is evident that the problem is real and the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide is one of the ways to solve the problem. In this chapter we discuss three families of compounds that catalyze the reduction of carbon dioxide. The general property of these macrocyclic complexes is that they reduce the overpotential required for this reaction to a more positive potential than metallic cathodes. [Pg.243]
