The surface treatment chemistry of glass fiber is normally tailored to match the product function. Reinforcement size chemistries must be compatible with a multitude of processes and with the composite material end-use performance criteria. Processes such as injection molding require chopped fibers with compatibility for thermoplastic compounds. Filament winding and pultrusion require continuous fibers with utihty in thermoset and thermoplastic compovmds. Typically three basic components cue used with glass size chemistries a film former, lubricant, and coupling agent. Readers are directed to the patent literature or [1] and [2] for more specific details. [Pg.684]

The effect of glass size and tex on spray-up moulding is shown in Figures 4.2 and 4.3. [Pg.60]

The effect of glass size causes a variation in property level, the extent of which will depend upon the type of size, process and property being measured. Tex is also important for spray mouldings with finer tex (40) giving better properties than a coarse tex (80) for a given level of reinforcement. [Pg.60]

These materials have only recently become available in Europe and development work is still under way to develop suitable glass sizings and reduce the melt viscosity (by adding a small amount of plasticizer to the resin). Unlike SMC, these materials have so far only been used for semi-structural applications, primarily motor vehicles. [Pg.92]
