The application type defines the desired form of the synthetic material. A coating may be spin cast or solvent cast upon a substrate. The preparation of membranes is not trivial, as many techniques have been developed to give the desired properties methods include solution casting, melt pressing, and solvent precipitation. Semibatch Reactors. Semibatch reactors are the most versatile of reactor types. Thermoplastic injection molds are semibatch reactors in which shaped plastic articles are produced from melts. In mol ding thermoplastics, large clamping forces of up to 5000 metric tons are needed to keep molds together, while highly viscous polymers are forced into their cavities. Heat transfer is critical. If the molds are too cold, polymers soHdify before filling is completed if they are too hot, the time required for cooling delays production. [Pg.522]

The injection mold need not be made of noncatalytic metals any high grade tool steel may be used because the plastic cools in the mold and undergoes Httle decomposition. Plastics are no different in this respect than other materials. If steel, aluminum, and ceramics were to be made into a different complex shapes and no prior history on their behavior for that processing shape existed, a period of trial and error would be required to ensure their meeting the required measurements.
