In addition many consumers prefer not to consume GM products and expect governments to enforce compositional and labelling standards. Detection of GM of oils presents an analytical problem as GM tests are carried out on proteinaceous material which is not present at high levels in oils and fats, even prior to refining. 

Future authenticity testing of cocoa butter and chocolate products is likely to follow defined paths. To assure the authenticity of cocoa butters databases of the composition of the relevant fats will be required, constructed from a statistically significantly number of samples of proven provenance and processing history. Analyses must be carried out using internationally validated methods and characterized reference materials by a number of respected laboratories. Scientific co-operation within the European Union is beginning to develop such approaches in ensuring the authenticity of other foods such as olive oil. 

Of great importance has been the rapid increase in the use of statistical interpretations of multivariate data made possible by the ready availability of computers. These techniques allow the results from several techniques to be combined, often revealing differences in samples that were not apparent when using the single techniques. The development of statistical methods has been such that the value of classical techniques, such as the comparison of fatty acid or sterol profiles, which can be carried out rapidly with familiar laboratory equipment, has been revived.

Future issues of Advances in Chemical Engineering will include articles in all the major subjects of support frontiers of mature areas, development of high-tech areas, protection of environment and health, and development of new engineering science concepts and tools. 

However, the information derived from a detailed pharmacokinetic study will help to anticipate potential botanical product-drug interactions, to optimize the bioavailability, the quality, and hence the efficacy of herbal medicines, to support evidence for the synergistic nature of herbal medicines, and to better appreciate the safety and toxicity of the plant. Because pharmacokinetic studies with herbal medicines are often complicated by their chemical complexity and by the fact that the active compounds are often unknown, it could be one future issue to assess bioavailability by measuring surrogate parameters in plasma or tissue instead of directly assaying putative active compounds in the blood. In summary, to use HMPs in an evidence-based approach and to achieve the status rational phytomedicine, more experimental studies are needed to characterize the bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of botanical products.

In general, progress in drug development depends on data obtained from analytical instruments. Thus, how this information is derived and provided to decision makers is critical to the success of the pharmaceutical industry. LC/MS technologies have effectively and uniquely supported the productivity (quantitative processes) and efficiency (qualitative processes) needs of drug development. Future issues appear to be directed toward enhancement of the information-gathering process that focuses on the relationship between data and decision (Table 8.1).
