Since the establishment of the IV V teams (the GE IVVT and the OIWT) in 1999, the IV V activities have been progressed smoothly. Two problems have been encoimtered ftiough, but resolved. Also, from this implementation, a couple of recommendations for performing future software IV V activities can be made. One is to fully understand the regulatory requirements on software IV V before an IV V project gets started. The other is to establish a tracking system for IV V activities in IV V project to facilitate control and monitoring of the issues identified. [Pg.89]

Although the petrochemical and metals industries were the primai y focus of the toxic air pollutants legislation, approximately forty of these substances have been detected in fossil power plant flue gas. Mercury, which is found in trace amounts in fossil fuels such as coal and oil, is liberated during the combustion process and these emissions may be regulated in the future. EPA issued an Information Collection Request (ICR) that required all coal-fired plants to analyze their feed coal for mercury and chlorine. Since these data will be used in making a regulatory decision on mercury near the end ot the year 2000, it is critical that the power industry provide the most accurate data possible. [Pg.445]

Control systems will play a key role in future distributed plants ]139,145]. As a rule of thumb, plants will be smaller and simpler, but the control systems will be much more advanced, of a standard not known today. Plant personnel for operation and managing will ultimately no longer be required, except for start-up, shutdown, and services. This is a shift from a regulatory to a servo role, supported by a sophisticated sequence control. Control is needed for safety issues, operability, and product quality control. Sensors have a central role to provide the information needed for control and modeling and simulation is needed for process models. [Pg.60]
