To reduce deviations in blood pressure measurement in the clinic, the patient and clinician should not talk during blood pressure readings. The measurement arm is supported and positioned at heart level with the blood pressure cuff encircling at least 80% of arm circumference. If a mercury or aneroid device is used, then the palpatory method must be used first to estimate the systolic blood pressure.18 If an automated device is used, this is not necessary. After the patient s cuff is inflated above the systolic pressure, the mercury column should drop at a rate of 2 to 3 mm per second. A stethoscope placed over the brachial artery in the antecubital fossa identifies the first and last audible Korotkoff sounds, which should be taken as systolic and diastolic pressure, respectively. A minimum of two readings at least 1 minute apart are then averaged. If measurements... [Pg.15]

Signs and Symptoms Causes fever, labored breathing with increased respiratory rate, and depression. There may be paroxysmal coughing. May cause conjunctivitis, subcutaneous edema of the head, neck, brisket, thorax, and ventral abdomen. There may be edema in the supraorbital fossa above the eye. [Pg.532]

Gender Specific Expression of Volatiles in Captive Fossas (Cryptoprocta ferox) During the Mating Season... [Pg.161]

On Madagascar, the fossa is protected from human interference in different national parks. The total population of captive fossas was calculated as 85 individuals (49 males, 36 females) worldwide with 35 males and 23 females housed in 16 European zoos (Winkler 2002). [Pg.161]

Studies of free-ranging fossas described an orange staining of belly and breast hair, with an increased intensity in male individuals during the breeding season (Hawkins 1998). It was assumed that this visual effect is supplemented by olfactory compounds. More recently, a difference in scent-marking behaviour of male and... [Pg.161]

Manipulations of any kind in untrained carnivores require general anaesthesia. Sample collection was therefore performed on anaesthetised individuals. Depending on the preferences of the veterinarian, the fossas were either caught with nets or anaesthetised by a combination of injectable narcotics (Xylazine 2.5-5.0 mg/kg, Ketam-inhydrochloride 10.5-20 mg/kg and Diazepam 0.5-1.0 mg/kg) prior to anaesthesia by inhalation gases (Isoflurane 1.5-3 Vol. % and Oxygen l-2L/min) applied by facial mask. [Pg.162]

Of all animals hair samples of four different body areas (throat region, sternal region, lateral abdomen, ventral of the base of the tail) (Fig. 15.1) were taken using an electric hair-clipping device. Additionally, during one breeding season, swabs of the anal gland secretion were collected from 8 male and 7 female fossas. [Pg.162]

In addition seasonal differences were detected. Two specific substances were expressed by male fossas in higher concentrations during the breeding than during the non-breeding season. [Pg.167]

Future work should identify further gender and season specific volatiles, to conduct a comparative study on free ranging fossas, and to perform bioassays to prove a pheromonal function of the identified substances. [Pg.167]
