Flotation suits

Two main operational variables that differentiate the flotation of finely dispersed coUoids and precipitates in water treatment from the flotation of minerals is the need for quiescent pulp conditions (low turbulence) and the need for very fine bubble sizes in the former. This is accompHshed by the use of electroflotation and dissolved air flotation instead of mechanically generated bubbles which is common in mineral flotation practice. Electroflotation is a technique where fine gas bubbles (hydrogen and oxygen) are generated in the pulp by the appHcation of electricity to electrodes. These very fine bubbles are more suited to the flotation of very fine particles encountered in water treatment. Its industrial usage is not widespread. Dissolved air flotation is similar to vacuum flotation. Air-saturated slurries are subjected to vacuum for the generation of bubbles. The process finds limited appHcation in water treatment and in paper pulp effluent purification. The need to mn it batchwise renders it less versatile. [Pg.52]

Two air-saturation systems suited for use in water treatment are shown in Figure 15 (31). Such mechanisms faciHtate the release of air that generates much finer bubbles than mechanical air dispersion methods used in mineral flotation practice. [Pg.52]

Induced Gas Flotation. Mechanically induced gas dotation (IGF) is employed extensively to remove suspended solids, oil, and other organic matter from oil-field and refinery wastewaters. Consequently, these IGF units are particularly suited to the treatment of oil-in-water or reverse emulsions. Such units generally follow gravity oil-water separation units such as FWKOs, gun barrels, and skim tanks in oil-field-produced water-treatment schemes, and also handle the oily water streams generated from all treaters in a specific produced-fiuid treatment plant. [Pg.357]

Centrifugal separators are applied in industry for the recovery of microbial cells from cultivation media. In waste water engineering a combination of flocculation and sedimentation is practiced. In the laboratory, cross-flow membrane separation is often used for retention of the cells. Some microorganisms and cells are enriched in the foam therefore, flotation is suited for the recovery of particular microbial cells from cultivation medium. [Pg.219]

Flotation of proteins and microbial cells is especially efficient at low concentrations, which are well below the values common in microbial cultivations with complex media and high-performance strains used in industry. Therefore, they are only suited for the recovery of proteins and cells fi-om synthetic media with low protein and cell concentrations. However, at low protein concentrations, the enzymes are deactivated. Dilution of the cultivation medium to enhance enrichment of the cells is uneconomical, because the improvement in the enrichment is fully compensated by the reduction in cell concentration in the feed. The final cell concentration in the foam liquid remains the same. The protein separation S can be increased by reducing the aeration rate and protein concentration in the feed and increasing the bubble size, the temperature, aerated liquid layer and foam layer heights, as long as the foam remains stable. The foaminess of several cultivation media can be predicted on the basis of the equilibrium surface tension. [Pg.229]

The objective for this new step was to increase the global zinc extraction by 0.6% with another zinc ferrite leach, and also to increase the iron extraction by partially destroying the jarosites formed in the acid circuit. This produced a higher quality lead-silver residue better suited for high silver recoveries in the subsequent flotation step. Two installed tanks of 80 m capacity were refitted as reactors and one thickener of 500 m capacity, previously used in the counter-current jarosite wash, were connected to form this new step. [Pg.254]
