Ferric hydroxide coprecipitation techniques are lengthy, two days being needed for a complete precipitation. To speed up this analysis, Tzeng and Zeitlin [595] studied the applicability of an intrinsically rapid technique, namely adsorption colloid flotation. This separation procedure uses a surfactant-collector-inert gas system, in which a charged surface-inactive species is adsorbed on a hydrophobic colloid collector of opposite charge. The colloid with the adsorbed species is floated to the surface with a suitable surfactant and inert gas, and the foam layer is removed manually for analysis by a methylene blue spectrometric procedure. The advantages of the method include a rapid separation, simple equipment, and excellent recoveries. As drops of this dispersed phase collect near the separation interface, they will flocculate into a closely packed mass which can best be described by the term liquid-liquid foam. Each drop is surrounded by a thin film of the continuous phase. The film between two adjacent drops can rupture and the two combine by coalescence in the foam layer. Only those drops near the general phase boundary can coalesce into the general drop phase layer. In a 4-1. beaker equipped with a stirrer which can be operated above the liquid level to break the foam are placed 250 ml. of 12 N hydrochloric acid and 250 ml. of water. Methods which enploy liquid phase treating liquors (spray, transfer rolls and belts, etc.) share a cannon difficulty stemming from the lew volume of liquor in relation to the large surface area of the fibers conprising the substrate to be treated. This difficulty is acerbated when aqueous liquors are to be applied to hydrophilic fibers. Foam coating methods enploy stable foams which allow the thickness of the liquid-air mixture to be controlled by a doctor blade or roll. Conparatively low add-ons can be achieved by virtue of the low density of the foam layer, but the stable nature of such foam, and its immobile liquid phase, inhibit rapid, uniform distribution through the substrate. [Pg.145]
