Nomenclature is the compilation of descriptions of things and technical terms in a special field of knowledge, the vocabulary ofa technical language. In the history of chemistry, a systematic nomenclature became significant only rather late. In the early times of alchemy, the properties of the substance or its appearance played a major role in giving a compound a name. Libavius was the first person who tried to fix some kind of nomenclature in Alckeinia in 1,597. In essence, he gave names to chemical equipment and processes (methods, names that are often still valid in our times. [Pg.18]

The enzyme systems responsible for fixing atmospheric N2 to form ammonia are known as the nitrogenases. These enzymes function at field temperatures and 0.8 atm N2 pressure, whereas the industrial Haber-Bosch process requires high temperatures (300-400°C) and high pressures (200-300 atm) in a capital-intensive process that relies on burning fossil fuel. Small wonder, then, that the chemistry of the nitrogenases has attracted considerable attention for many years. [Pg.160]

Glyoxal-based fixatives work faster than formalin. Small biopsies may be ready to process after only an hour while properly grossed larger specimens are ready in about 6h. Structural detail is remarkable in its clarity (Fig. 12.9). Red blood cells are lysed, but that rarely presents a problem. Eosinophilic granules are reduced in prominence (see below). Special stains work well, except for tests for iron (the mildly acidic pH is detrimental) and the silver detection methods for Helicobacter pylori. Most notably, glyoxal-fixed tissues retain strong immunoreactivity for most antigens. The chemistry behind most of this is known. [Pg.212]

Using these performance indicators for benchmarking is usually very complex due to the diversity of production processes and business models. For example, processing special chemistry in batch processes usually leads to higher fixed costs... [Pg.15]

Haldor Topspe s fixed-bed alkylation (FBA ) technology is a compromise between liquid and solid acid-based processes. It applies a supported liquid-phase catalyst in which liquid triflic (trifluoromethanesulfonic) acid is supported on a porous material (206,241). The acid in the bed is concentrated in a well-defined catalyst zone, in which all the alkylation chemistry takes place at the upstream... [Pg.309]

Table 8.30 shows the chemistry of seawater compiled by Turekian (1969) for major, minor, and trace constituents, expressed in parts per billion (ppb) at a mean salinity of 35. The listed values are estimates of mean amounts in solution, whereas elemental concentrations actually vary with depth. The most conspicuous variations are observed in the first 200 m from the surface, where photosynthetic processes are dominant and phosphorus and nitrogen are fixed by plankton and benthos, as well as silica and calcium, which constitute, respectively, the skeletons of planktonic algae (diatom) and the shells of foraminifera and mollusks. [Pg.606]
