For jet fuels, the elimination of free water using filters and coalescers by purging during storage, and the limit of 5 ppm dissolved water are sufficient to avoid incidents potentially attributable to water contamination formation of micro-crystals of ice at low temperature, increased risk of corrosion, growth of micro-organisms. [Pg.250]

Dissolve 1 g. of anthracene in 10 ml. of glacial acetic acid and place in 50 ml. bolt head flask fitted with a reflux water-condenser. In general, fungal mycelia are filtered relatively easily, because mycelia filter cake has sufficiently large porosity. Yeast and bacteiia are much more difficult to handle because of thefr small size. Alternative filtration methods, which eliminate the filter cake, are becoming more acceptable for bacterial and yeast separation. Micro-filtration is achieved by developing large cross-flow fluid velocities across the filter surface while the velocity vector normal to the surface is relatively small. Build up of filter cake and problems of high cake resistance are therefore prevented. Micro-filtration is not discussed in this section. [Pg.175]

PIV has become the most popular technique to measure velocity and turbulent properties (Figure 15.1). The movement of seed particles in a millimeter-thick laser sheet is measured by correlating two photos taken a few milliseconds apart. With two cameras, it is also possible to obtain a 3D vector of the velocity in that plane. The method gives, in general, very good resolution of the flow, but it requires optical access. Also, measurement close to walls can be problematic due to light reflections that disturb the measurements. Both solutions were fed with equal flow velocity. A 300 W high-pressure mercury lamp was used as light source.
