Field of study

Elucidation of the phase relationships between the different forms of carbon is a difficult field of study because of the very high temperatures and pressures that must be applied. However, the subject is one of great technical importance because of the need to understand methods for transforming graphite and disordered forms of carbon into diamond. The diagram has been revised and reviewed at regular intervals [59-61] and a simplified form of the most recent diagram for carbon [62] is in Fig. 5. [Pg.12]

This chapter is entitled Precursors of Materials Science and the foregoing major Sections have focused on the atomic hypothesis, crystallography, phase equilibria and microstructure, which I have presented as the main supports that made possible the emergence of modern materials. science. In what follows, some other fields of study that made substantial contributions are more brielly discussed. It should be remembered that this is in no way a le.xihnok, my task is not to explain the detailed nature of various phenomena and entitities, but only to outline how they came to be invented or recognised and how they have contributed to the edifice of modern materials science. The reader may well think that I have paid too much attention, up to now, to metals that was inevitable, but I shall do my best to redress the balance in due course. [Pg.93]

To recapitulate, the legs of the imaginary tripod on which the structure of materials science is assembled are atoms and crystals phase equilibria microstructure. Of course, these are not wholly independent fields of study. Microstructure consists of phases geometrically disposed, phases are controlled by Gibbsian thermodynamics. [Pg.130]

Another subsidiary field of study was the effect of high concentrations of a diffusing solute, such as interstitial carbon in iron, in slowing diffusivity (in the case of carbon in fee austenite) because of mutual repulsion of neighbouring dissolved carbon atoms. By extension, high carbon concentrations can affect the mobility of substitutional solutes (Babu and Bhadeshia 1995). These last two phenomena, quenched-in vacancies and concentration effects, show how a parepisteme can carry smaller parepistemes on its back. [Pg.170]

The neutron activation technique mentioned in the preceding paragraph is only one of a range of nuclear methods used in the study of solids - methods which depend on the response of atomic nuclei to radiation or to the emission of radiation by the nuclei. Radioactive isotopes ( tracers ) of course have been used in research ever since von Hevesy s pioneering measurements of diffusion (Section 4.2.2). These techniques have become a field of study in their own right and a number of physics laboratories, as for instance the Second Physical Institute at the University of Gottingen, focus on the development of such techniques. This family of techniques, as applied to the study of condensed matter, is well surveyed in a specialised text... [Pg.236]

An important field of study for power plants is that of the combinedplant [ 1 ]. A broad definition of the combined power plant (Fig. 1.5) is one in which a higher (upper or topping) thermodynamic cycle produces power, but part or all of its heat rejection is used in supplying heat to a lower or bottoming cycle. The upper plant is frequently an open circuit gas turbine while the lower plant is a closed circuit steam turbine together they form a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. [Pg.2]

It is thought that /ki chimedes had a lower regard for his mechanical work however, this is difficult to validate because few writings about his mechanical devices remain. Aixhiniedcs used mechanics as a tool to think about abstract problems, rather than as a field of study itself. Contemporaries such as Plato frowned upon such a link between geometry and mechanics they considered it as a corruption of the purity of geometry. [Pg.83]

While serious research of the behavior of CA systems demands the use of dedicated hardware, the often high cost of such hardware sometimes prevents its acquisition, particularly by young researchers and graduate students just entering this field of study. It is therefore important to realize that there are many excellent software-only solutions that can often be used very effectively for research. While the list provided below is by no means exhaustive, it gives some idea of the kind of packages that are currently available either commercially or via anonymous ftp over the Internet. [Pg.717]

We can say little more about how the nature of the reactants determines the reaction rate until we consider in detail how some reactions take place. For the time being, it will suffice to observe that this is an active field of study and much remains to be learned. [Pg.126]

We have payed much attention to the investigations of excitation energy transfer in PCSs since the analysis of disclosed effects affords an entrance to the study of certain photochemical processes in PCSs. As to the photochemistry of PCSs, it is considered one of the promising fields of study not only from the theoretical but also from the practical point of view. [Pg.25]

While the six unknown values for d and f may seem daunting, present usage corresponds to the simplifying approximation of assuming all the d values are the same, and of putting all f() = 1. Evaluating the DIFF at least makes these assumptions explicit. Once evaluated, d and f() values should hold over a usefully wide range of fields of study. [Pg.217]

There are approximately 200 other proteins present in bone, though most of them are present only in trace amounts (Delmas et al., 1984 Linde et al., 1980, as cited in van Klinken, 1991). The second most common bone protein, osteocalcin, comprises 1-2 weight % of total fresh bone. Osteocalcin bonds with both the bone mineral fraction and bone collagen, but it seems to be unstable in solutions. Due to its small molecular size and strong mineral stabilization, osteocalcin can survive up to 50.000 years (C.l. Smith et al., 2005), and it may offer an alternative to the use of collagen in paleoenvironmental stable isotope research. However, osteocalcin s role and importance in this field of study has yet to be defined (Collins et al., 2002). [Pg.143]

The propagation of premixed flames in closed vessels has been a subject of combustion research since its inception as a defined field of study in the late 1800s, when Mallard and LeChatelier [1] explored the behavior of explosions in the tunnels of coal mines. In the early decades of the twentieth century, experimenters used streak cameras to monitor the progress of premixed flame fronts propagating in tubes and channels without... [Pg.93]

The only respect in which the hot atom chemistry of organometallic compounds has so far been applied to other fields of study is in the area of isotope enrichment. Much of this has been done for isolation of radioactive nuclides from other radioactive species for the purpose of nuclear chemical study, or for the preparation of high specific activity radioactive tracers. Some examples of these applications have been given in Table II. The most serious difficulty with preparation of carrier-free tracers by this method is that of radiolysis of the target compound, which can be severe under conditions suited to commercial isotope production, so that the radiolysis products dilute the enriched isotopes. A balance can be struck in some cases, however, between high yield and high specific activity (19, 7J),... [Pg.247]

One of the most potent routes for transmission of bacterial disease is via the air. Cross-infeetion in hospital wards, infeetion in operating theatres, the transmission of disease in elosed spaces such as cinemas and other places of assembly, in the ward rooms and erew s quarters of ships and in submarines are all well known. Of equal importance is the provision of a bacteria-fiee environment for aseptic manipulations generally. Clearly, the disinfeetion of atmospheres is a worthwhile field of study and to this end much research has been done. It is equally clearly important to be able to evaluate preparations claimed to be air disinfeetants. [Pg.250]

Catalysis is a very broad field of study that is closely intenvoven ivith numerous other scientific disciplines. This becomes immediately evident if we realize that catalysis as phenomenon encompasses many length scales. Fig. 1.8 illustrates this for the case of heterogeneous catalysis. [Pg.17]

There are various definitions of acids and bases, and in discussing them it should be emphasized that the question is not one of validity but one of utility. Indeed, the problem of validity does not arise because of the fundamental nature of a definition. The problem is entirely one of choosing a definition which is of greatest use in the study of a particular field of acid-base chemistry. One point that needs to be borne in mind is that a concept of acids and bases is required that is neither too general nor too restrictive for the particular field of study. [Pg.12]

This volume of Catalysis of Organic Reactions compiles 64 papers presented at the 22nd conference organized by the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society (ORCS) (www.orcs.orgl. The conference was held March 30-April 3, 2008 in Richmond, Virginia at The Jefferson Hotel where these papers reported recent developments in catalysis as apphed to the production of chemicals. Each of the papers documenting these presentations and published here was edited by ORCS members (drawn from both academia and industry) and was peer-reviewed by experts in related fields of study. [Pg.3]

Hancock received his B.A from Harvard and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1968. After a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale, he worked as assistant and associate professor in the chemistry department of the University of California—Davis from 1968 to 1979, where he taught graduate and undergraduate chemistry and did research in organic and organometallic photochemistry. His work opened a new field of study in organoboron photochemistry. [Pg.11]

Foster Development of Prophylactic and Antidotal Measures. The stimulation of laboratory and clinical research on prophylactic and treatment measures for many of the newer economic poisons is much needed at the present time. Considerable laboratory and animal work remains to be done before investigations can be undertaken. The therapeutic trials committee of the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry of the AMA has had considerable experience in the organization of impartial clinical trials on remedial agents, and its knowledge and facilities would be offered freely in such matters. However, at the present time, the field of study is so broad that these investigations must be restricted to individual agents which show promise of wide acceptance and use. [Pg.64]

Clearly all the answers to the questions of the mechanisms of both the photodimerization and photooxidation of anthracene are not yet known. Hopefully, what we have seen in this chapter will serve to convince the reader that photochemistry is still an exciting and challenging field of study in which there is ample room for further research. [Pg.342]

Environmental economists and ecological economists work in very similar fields but with some differences that it might be useful for the reader to know about. Ecological economics can be defined as the field of study that addresses the relationship between ecosystem and economic systems in the broadest sense [23]. While the ecological economist has a biophysical view of value, the environmental economist states that the value cannot be reduced to a simple physical metric [18]. [Pg.121]

Synthesis of PHA in plants is a relatively young field of study. Consequently, there remains a number of areas which have been poorly worked on and for which there are more questions than answers. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that the usefulness of PHA in plants can reach beyond the biotechnology of polyester synthesis in agricultural crops to include PHA synthesis as a novel tool in the study of basic plant biochemical pathways and metabolism. [Pg.208]

This chapter has shed light on the increasing role of ethical (fair) trade and its relationship with organic production and, subsequently, their key associations and differences have been illustrated. The authors expect the above discussion to prove beneficial and to provide further knowledge in this field of study. We also expect further research to be undertaken that could validate and/or contradict some of the key arguments cited in this work. [Pg.464]

In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of voltage-gated calcium channel subtypes and function, with an emphasis on neuronal transmission. The structure and kinetics of calcium channels is an extensive field of study, and outstanding reviews have recently appeared [3,4]. This chapter is focused on the potential opportunities for small-molecule intervention in neuronal signaling via antagonism of voltage-gated calcium channel subtypes, with a brief review of the chemotypes that have been recently reported to modify channel function. [Pg.4]
