While the six unknown values for d and f may seem daunting, present usage corresponds to the simplifying approximation of assuming all the d values are the same, and of putting all f() = 1. Evaluating the DIFF at least makes these assumptions explicit. Once evaluated, d and f() values should hold over a usefully wide range of fields of study. 

One of the most potent routes for transmission of bacterial disease is via the air. Cross-infeetion in hospital wards, infeetion in operating theatres, the transmission of disease in elosed spaces such as cinemas and other places of assembly, in the ward rooms and erew s quarters of ships and in submarines are all well known. Of equal importance is the provision of a bacteria-fiee environment for aseptic manipulations generally. Clearly, the disinfeetion of atmospheres is a worthwhile field of study and to this end much research has been done. It is equally clearly important to be able to evaluate preparations claimed to be air disinfeetants. 

A spin-off of all of these task forces has been the open discussions that have led to improved design considerations and effective use of resources in the conduct of field exposure studies. These task forces have evaluated a variety of exposure measuring techniques, developed study designs for conducting studies, and performed field studies in a uniform and efficient manner. The task force protocols and designs have become models for the industry, having received valuable input and approval from the regulatory community. 

There is some controversy regarding which method to use in economic evaluation studies to estimate costs and benefits, which has led to attempts at standardization in the field of the economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals. 

From the available literature it becomes clear that method evaluation studies do not surpass the level of within-laboratory performances. Although several of these (see Table 3.3.1) reveal satisfactory levels of quality and environmentally relevant limits of detection, a genuine quality assurance of these methods is still lacking. There are no reports of interlaboratory studies and certified reference materials for surfactants are not available on the market yet. It can therefore be concluded that there remains much to be done in the field of improving and evaluating quality of analytical measurements of surfactants in biota. 

Most researchers have felt that biochemical changes in plant tissues are associated with so many normal growth and stress phenomena that they would have no relevance in field evaluations of air pollution effects. Keller has associated changes in peroxidase activity with different pollution stresses (fluoride and oxidants) in apricot and white ash growing in areas of high pollution, as opposed to those of low pollution. Subsequent to this developmental work, the U. S. Bureau of Mines ran parallel evaluation studies of the N02/N0X passive sampler and colorimeter and determined their suitability for field operation. 

The results of this study also produced a Field Evaluation Document (Volume II) and an Annoted Bibliography (Volume III) containing over 500 relevant sources. The Field Evaluation Document was designed for use by contractors and state agencies to establish the relative safety and for identification of potential hazards at the various locations and work elements on a sulfur-asphalt construction project. Recommended clothing and first aid procedures were included in this document. 

Among the methods of saline water conversion being investigated by the Department of the Interior s Office of Saline Water is direct solar distillation. One phase of the study of solar distillation includes the field evaluation of stills of promising design, which is being carried out for the Office of Saline Water by Battelle Memorial Institute. 

The value of the environment has to be an integral part of the equations applied to profitability calculations. The value of the respective aquifer has to be taken into account in economic considerations. This approach will no doubt reveal that cleanly managed enterprises are profitable, and all the rest are in the long run economic disasters. Evaluating the value of the relevant aquifers necessitates delineation of their extent, and this is in the realm of the hydrologist s and hydrochemist s field of study. 

This book contains a detailed overview of the current knowledge in the field of dry chemistry both in the physicians office laboratories and large medical laboratories. The results from many evaluation studies are presented, as is data from interference studies which complete the descriptions of many dry chemistry methods. 

Although the 4-RAS have not been tested as extensively as the three-ring and two-ring analogs of strigol, GR-24 is particularly attractive from the standpoint of activity and stability and appears to be a prime candidate for field evaluation and further study toward optimizing and simplifying the synthetic procedure. 

Measurement of ultrasonic velocity through an electrolyte solution permits evaluation of the isothermal compressibility, which can be related to ionic solvation phenomena, though only by making a number of necessary assumptions in the treatment. Yeager s review [20] refers to a number of other reviews in this field and also to the absorption of ultrasound by electrolyte solutions, another field widely studied at the time. The prime value of laboratory-based findings, such as those quoted here, is to indicate those formulations that are worthy of field evaluation or to isolate factors associated with a specific material or method of presentation w hich may influence performance. All recommendations for u.se of products must be determined as a result of field assessment vM products and not simply by extrapolation from laboratory studies (Schneider and Bennett. 1985 Owens. 1990). As far as possible, the recommendations made in subsequent sections are based on held evaluations or the product label claims made by the manufacturer.
