High pollution

The most common method of converting iron ore to metallic iron utilizes a blast furnace wherein the material is melted to form hot metal (pig iron). Approximately 96% of the world s iron is produced this way (see Iron). However, in the blast furnace process energy costs are relatively high, pollution problems of associated equipment are quite severe, and capital investment requirements are often prohibitively expensive. In comparison to the blast furnace method, direct reduction permits a wider choice of fuels, is environmentally clean, and requires a much lower capital investment. 

Landfill disposal of certain categories of solid waste may result in gas generation, mainly methane, and a highly polluted leachate. The methane may be drawn off, to avoid a flammable hazard on- or off-site. The leachate is pumped off for treatment. 

Categories for exhaust air (EHA) are also defined in prEN 13779. Normally the EHA category for air to be discharged outdoors is the same as ETA, but if the system includes reliable and monitored cleaning equipment, the category can be one lower. With these provisions, air from industrial processes with very high pollution level, in category ETA 4 can be cleaned to EHA 3 levels.

By focusing on concentration of ozone, the new standard w ill do more Uian merely designate high-pollution areas as out of compliimce - for the first time, it w ill also respond to health concerns based on how much an area is out of compliance... 

The deposit resists atmospheric tarnish even in the presence of high pollution by sulphur dioxide (in contrast to nickel) and hydrogen sulphide, and coatings exposed to the outdoor atmosphere remain bright indefinitely, sometimes taking on a slightly more pink colour as the oxide film thickens. 

An average adult breathes about 8.50 X 103 L of air per day. The concentration of lead in highly polluted urban air is 7.0 X 10 6 g of lead per one m3 of air. Assume that 75% of die lead is present as particles less than 1.0 X 10 6 m in diameter, and that 50% of die particles below that size are retained in the lungs. Calculate the mass of lead absorbed in this manner in 1 year by an average adult living in this environment...

Receptor populations considered, which may include humans, animals, plants, micro-organisms, specific habitats or communities, or abiotic receptors subpopulations that are exposed to unusually high pollutant levels may be highlighted. 

Manufacturing of olive oil is of fundamental economic importance for many Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Spain. ..). However this process involves an intensive consumption of water and produces large amounts of Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW), that is released without any treatment into the aquatic environment causing deleterious environmental effects [1]. OMWs are a serious environmental and social problem in Mediterranean countries [2], due to the high pollutant load, seasonal discharge, type and quality of the pollutants and difficulties to find technically and economically favourable solution.
