These ambiguities eventuady led the Federal Trade Commission to take action ia the case of cedular plastics and to restrict the use of such terminology (3). This action, ia addition to the prohibition placed on the use of certain terminology, requires the use of a caveat whenever the results of burning tests are cited. Much of the older Hterature, however, as wed as some of the more recent pubHcations, use this restricted terminology.

Fiber. High molecular weight linear PPS is weU-suited for fiber applications. The inherent properties of PPS (flame resistance, chemical resistance, and thermal stability) make PPS fiber highly desirable ia textile applications (128). PPS fiber has been designated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as a new generic class of materials called sulfar. Typical fiber properties are listed ia Table 7 (see High performance fibers). 

The Federal Trade Commission has aimounced a rule, effective November 30, 1995, that sets test procedures and labeling standards for recycled oil used as engine lubricating oil (35). The test procedures used are those contained in the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System of the American Petroleum Institute (API) (36). The rule states in effect that if recycled oils meet the requirements of the API Certification System, such oils ate substantially equivalent to new oil for use as engine oil. This federal rule preempts certain state recycled oil rules (35). 

Independent of these centers, the FDA also has overlapping jurisdiction with several other federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms the Federal Trade Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency. 

In recent years there has been considerable interest in aromatic polyamide fibres, better known as aramid fibres. These are defined by the US Federal Trade Commission as a manufactured fibre in which the fibre-forming substance is a long chain synthetic polyamide in which at least 85% of the amide linkages are attached directly to two aromatic rings. ... 

One partieular form of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers is the elastic fibre known as spandex fibre. Like the usual thermoplastic rubbers these materials consist of hard and soft segments but to qualify for the term spandex by the US Federal Trade Commission the polymer used should contain at least 85% of segmented polyurethane. The first commercial material of this type was introduced by Du Pont in 1958 (Lycra). Several other similar materials have since been introduced including Dorlastan (Bayer), Spanzelle (Courtaulds) and Vyrene (US Rubber).

OTC products may be unacceptable to the Federal Trade Commission and FDA, as it promotes the daily use of the product. So, it is apparent that different types of packaging are needed, depending on whether a drug is for OTC or prescription-only use. 

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates dietary supplement advertising. The FTC prohibits unfair or deceptive acts or practices with the advertisement of dietary supplements from retailers and manufacturers. A pharmacy would be held liable if the pharmacy published a manufacturer s ad that was considered deceptive [26]. 

Nonetheless, more than eight months elapsed between the first reports of deaths from Elixir Sulfanilamide and the enactment of the law (53. Two more major obstacles had to be overcome—who should control food and drug advertising, the FDA or the Federal Trade Commission, and what process of court appeal should govern FDA regulation-making—before enough consensus came to get the law passed. 

Petition the Federal Trade Commission for proper labelling of chemicals. 

The Federal Trade Corranission (FTC) has jurisdiction over the advertising of nonprescription products that are marketed in interstate commerce. Although the FTC has a very powerful law, the agency can handle only a small percentage of the violations it detects. The Postal Service (USPS) has overlapping jurisdiction over products sold by mail. The USPS also has a strong law but has not pursued falsely advertised health products for more than 10 years.
