Fatty lower

The lower members of the series are liquids soluble in water and volatile in steam. As the number of carbon atoms in the molecule increases, the m.p. and b.p. rise and the acids become less soluble in water and less volatile. The higher fatty acids are solids, insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents. [Pg.173]

Additives acting on the pour point also modify the crystal size and, in addition, decrease the cohesive forces between crystals, allowing flow at lower temperatures. These additives are also copolymers containing vinyl esters, alkyl acrylates, or alkyl fumarates. Because of the charged nature of many Langmuir films, fairly marked effects of changing the pH of the substrate phase are often observed. The state of knowledge in the early 1990s of the effects of fat on health lacks clarity and general agreement. There is great support for the thesis that fully saturated fats are associated with problems of atherosclerosis and arterial fatty deposit, but there is evidence that stearates, which are saturates, are only poorly utilized in human digestion. Another body of work has estabUshed a connection between unsaturated fatty acids and a better state of arterial health and lowered fat body attachment to the arterial wall (23) contrary evidence exists that highly unsaturated fats polymerize more readily and thus contribute to arterial plaque formation. [Pg.117]

Detergents may be produced by the chemical reaction of fats and fatty acids with polar materials such as sulfuric or phosphoric acid or ethylene oxide. Detergents emulsify oil and grease because of their abiUty to reduce the surface tension and contact angle of water as well as the interfacial tension between water and oil. The basic flow sheet for the flotation-concentration of nonsulfide minerals is essentially the same as that for treating sulfides but the family of reagents used is different. The reagents utilized for nonsulfide mineral concentrations by flotation are usually fatty acids or their salts (RCOOH, RCOOM), sulfonates (RSO M), sulfates (RSO M), where M is usually Na or K, and R represents a linear, branched, or cycHc hydrocarbon chain and amines [R2N(R)3]A where R and R are hydrocarbon chains and A is an anion such as Cl or Br . Collectors for most nonsulfides can be selected on the basis of their isoelectric points. Thus at pH > pH p cationic surfactants are suitable collectors whereas at lower pH values anion-type collectors are selected as illustrated in Figure 10 (28). Three generations of latices as characterized by the type of surfactant used in manufacture have been defined (53). The first generation includes latices made with conventional (/) anionic surfactants like fatty acid soaps, alkyl carboxylates, alkyl sulfates, and alkyl sulfonates (54) (2) nonionic surfactants like poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(vinyl alcohol) used to improve freeze—thaw and shear stabiUty and (J) cationic surfactants like amines, nitriles, and other nitrogen bases, rarely used because of incompatibiUty problems. Portiand cement latex modifiers are one example where cationic surfactants are used. Anionic surfactants yield smaller particles than nonionic surfactants (55). Often a combination of anionic surfactants or anionic and nonionic surfactants are used to provide improved stabiUty. The stabilizing abiUty of anionic fatty acid soaps diminishes at lower pH as the soaps revert to their acids. First-generation latices also suffer from the presence of soap on the polymer particles at the end of the polymerization. Steam and vacuum stripping methods are often used to remove the soap and unreacted monomer from the final product (56). [Pg.25]

Inversion ofMon cjueous Polymers. Many polymers such as polyurethanes, polyesters, polypropylene, epoxy resins (qv), and siHcones that cannot be made via emulsion polymerization are converted into latices. Such polymers are dissolved in solvent and inverted via emulsification, foUowed by solvent stripping (80). SoHd polymers are milled with long-chain fatty acids and diluted in weak alkaH solutions until dispersion occurs (81). Such latices usually have lower polymer concentrations after the solvent has been removed. For commercial uses the latex soHds are increased by techniques such as creaming. [Pg.27]

Melamine—formaldehyde resins may be used in paper which contacts aqueous and fatty foods according to 21 CFR 121.181.30. However, because a lower PEL has been estabUshed by OSHA, some mills are looking for alternatives. Approaches toward achieving lower formaldehyde levels in the resins have been reported (66,67) the efficacy of these systems needs to be estabUshed. Although alternative resins are available, significant changes in the papermaking operation would be required in order for them to be used effectively. [Pg.333]

Natural mbber usually contains sufficient levels of naturally occurring fatty acids to solubilize the zinc salt. However, if these fatty acids are first extracted by acetone, the resultant "clean" natural mbber exhibits a much lower state of cure. Therefore, to ensure consistent cure rate, fatty acids are usually added. Sodium Dispersions. Sodium is easily dispersed in inert hydrocarbons (qv), eg, white oil or kerosene, by agitation, or using a homogenizing device. Addition of oleic acid and other long-chain fatty acids, higher alcohols and esters, and some finely divided soHds, eg, carbon or bentonite, accelerate dispersion and produce finer (1—20 -lm) particles. Ethoxylation of alkyl amine ethoxylates is an economical route to obtain the variety of properties required by numerous and sometimes smaH-volume industrial uses of cationic surfactants. Commercial amine ethoxylates shown in Tables 27 and 28 are derived from linear alkyl amines, ahphatic /-alkyl amines, and rosin (dehydroabietyl) amines. Despite the variety of chemical stmctures, the amine ethoxylates tend to have similar properties. In general, they are yellow or amber Hquids or yellowish low melting soHds. Specific gravity at room temperature ranges from 0.9 to 1.15, and they are soluble in acidic media. Higher ethoxylation promotes solubiUty in neutral and alkaline media. The lower ethoxylates form insoluble salts with fatty acids and other anionic surfactants. Salts of higher ethoxylates are soluble, however. Oil solubiUty decreases with increasing ethylene oxide content but many ethoxylates with a fairly even hydrophilic—hydrophobic balance show appreciable oil solubiUty and are used as solutes in the oil phase. [Pg.256]

Black Liquor Soap Recovery. Black Hquor soap consists of the sodium salts of the resin and fatty acids with small amounts of unsaponifiables. The soap is most easily separated from the black Hquor by skimming at an intermediate stage, when the black Hquor is evaporated to 25% soHds (7). At this soHds level, the soap rises in the skimmer at a rate of 0.76 m/h. At higher soHds concentrations, the tall oil soap is less soluble, but higher viscosity lowers the soap rise rate and increases the necessary residence times in the soap skimmer beyond 3—4 hours. The time required for soap recovery can be reduced by installing baffles, by the use of chemical flocculants (8,9), and by air injection into the suction side of the soap skimmer feed pump. Soap density is controUed by the rate of air injection. Optimum results (70% skimmer efficiency) are obtained at a soap density of 0.84 kg/L (7 lb/gal). This soap has a minimum residual black Hquor content of 15% (10—12). [Pg.305]

The higher fatty acids undergo decarboxylation and other undesirable reactions when heated at their boiling points at atmospheric pressure. Hence they are distilled at reduced pressure (15,16). Methyl esters boil at lower temperatures than acids at the same pressure as the result of the absence of hydrogen bonding (17). A procedure for calculation of the vapor pressures of fatty acids at various temperatures has been described (18). [Pg.83]
