Examining and consuming

Attempts have been made to isolate and identify the dominant chemicals responsible for feeding specificity of a number of insect herbivores. An extensive effort for the cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis, led to the conclusion that there were no dominant compounds in this case (Temple et al., 1968). On the contrary, these workers concluded that full feeding responses probably require a complicated profile of components. Few active components were identified because of the difficulties with reformulating active mixtures. [Pg.144]

The ultimate purpose of finding, examining, and consuming behaviors is, of course, to increase the probability that the insect (or its offspring) consumes hosts on which fitness, i.e., developmental rate, survivorship and/or fecundity, are maximized (Jaenike, 1978 Mitchell, 1981 Rausher, 1983). These fitness components are influenced by such plant characteristics as nutritional quality, presence or absence of toxins, and exposure to natural enemies, which collectively determine the host plant s suitability. Although documented cases are yet few, it is generally hypothesized that the acceptability of plant cues is positively correlated with suitability. [Pg.146]

The area of biotechnology or genetically modified foods is an excellent context in which to examine how consumers form perceptions and attitudes toward a new technology (or even toward older technologies such as irradiation) related to food. Both proponents and opponents of biotechnology argue that their goal is to educate consumers so that they can make informed... [Pg.126]

In the 13 case studies documented processes and experiences of attempts to substitute hazardous substances in the 1980s and 1990s were examined. The aim of the choice of cases was to cover a wide spectrum of substitution conditions consumer-close and consumer-remote products, product auxiliary materials and process auxiliary materials, SMEs and large-scale industiy, environment, consumer and occupational health and safety subjects, technical and organisational iimova-tions. [Pg.65]

In general, policy analysts examine sources of conflict in a market society and determine what the government might do to improve firm and consumer choices. This book examines the specific issue of chemicals in our modern industrial society and discusses how government can enhance public health. In this context, important policy issues include ... [Pg.1]

A medication error is any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional, patient, or consumer, according to the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention. The council, a group of more than 25 national and international organizations, including the FDA, examines and evaluates medication errors and recommends strategies for error prevention. [Pg.261]

We can determine what features of the chewing sequence influence assessment of particular textural characteristics of food by using this approach to examine the interaction between food and consumer during the mastication process. We should then be able to develop mathematical models for perception of textural qualities which take into account different texture combinations (for example, assessment of hardness in both elastic and brittle foods), and different breakdown patterns. Although currently at an early stage, mastication analysis shows promise for enhancing our measurement of perceived texture in foods. [Pg.322]

Delta receptor knockout mice were exposed to alcohol, and drinking was examined in the two-bottle choice and operant self-administration paradigms [73,80]. First, naive animals consumed alcohol as wild-type animals in the two-bottle choice. After training to self-administer alcohol, the mutant mice developed a stronger preference for alcohol and consumed more than wild-type mice in both tests. After alcohol experience also, their anxiety decreased and reversed to wild-type levels. This suggests that, in the case of alcohol, delta receptor activity may partly influence addictive behavior indirectly, by modulating anxiety-like responses. Whether this applies to selfconsumption of other drugs of abuse remains to be determined. [Pg.55]

Overall, results to date indicate that manufacturing and quality characteristics were normal for dairy products naturally enriched with CLA and consumer acceptability was comparable to unenriched dairy products. However, the single study examining fortification of skim milk with synthetic CLA during the manufacturing process had poor consumer acceptability. [Pg.114]
