Ra.m Tensile. A ram tensile test has been developed to evaluate the bond-2one tensile strength of explosion-bonded composites. The specimen is designed to subject the bonded interface to a pure tensile load. The cross-section area of the specimen is the area of the aimulus between the outer and inner diameters of the specimen. The specimen typically has a very short tensile gauge length and is constmcted so as to cause failure at the bonded interface. The ultimate tensile strength and relative ductihty of the explosion-bonded interface can be obtained by this technique. [Pg.149]

The evaluation methods could be direct, e.g., measuring a containment index, or indirect, e.g., measuring pressure loss or velocity distribution. The direct methods are used to measure the performance of a hood or an inlet during periodic preventive maintenance. Indirect methods are used for verifying or checking on a daily basis (routine checks). How often each method is used depends on the availability of instrumentation and qualified personnel, since direct measurement of a hood s performance can be both expensive and difficult. Perhaps the most widely misunderstood aspect of gauge development is the role of the controlled shock-compression experiment in the development process. It is often stated that the gauges are being calibrated. In fact, it is not possible to calibrate a gauge that must be used over the wide range of conditions and over the wide range of wave profiles encountered and is destroyed in use. Only in special cases of shocks to fixed conditions is the response measured for a gauge in controlled experiments directly a suitable calibration. There are different techniques to evaluate the quantitative stress level in prototype and production products. They can predict potential problems. Included is the use of electrical resistance strain gauges bonded on the surface of the product. This popular method identifies external and internal stresses. Their various configurations are made to identify stresses in different directions. This technique has been extensively used for over a half century on very small to very large products such as toys to airplanes.
