Not only is there a lack of absolute diagnoses or laboratory tests, a lack of standardization in objective severity scales hampers classification of the disease. Of the systems available, the SCORAD index, adapted by the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis, was previously the most often used, but it demonstrated interobserver variation. As such, research is continuing to identify a better system for classifying patients. ... 

The infants were seen on a monthly basis. The interview of the parents was based on a diary kept by the parents. The primary outcome of the study was the cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis during the first 6 months of life. The skin was investigated for atopic dermatitis according to the diagnostic criteria described by Harrigan and Rabinowitz (76) and Muraro et al. (69). The severity of the skin alterations was scored by the SCO RAD index based on extension, intensity of the skin symptoms, as well as on the subjective symptoms pruritus and sleep loss as recommended by the European Task Force on atopic dermatitis (77,78).

There are many products based on these life sciences standards, such as the aforementioned gene expression standard that is used in Rosetta Merck s Resolver product and the European Bioinformatics Institute s (EBI) Array-Express database. The LECIS (Laboratory Equipment Control Interface Specification) standard is used by Creon as part of their Q-DIS data standard support (note that one of the authors was the finalization task force chairperson for this standard).
