Establishing and Maintaining Communication

The lines of communication that were established in the toller selection phase can be formalized in the contract stage. The contract should spell out the persons to contact and under which circumstances they must be contacted. Detailed and continuing exchange of information is necessary in order to optimize the administration and performance of the tolling contract. The parties may want to come to agreement and include the following in the contract or supporting documentation to enhance communication  

As with any relationship involving two or more parties, communication is key to a successful tolling relationship.

With federation, databases can become part of the same information system because they share common communication language(s). Batch record preparation, SOP and test method archives, and many process equipment control systems are examples of systems in which requirements for 21 CFR 11 compliance appear excessive. A system that processes or communicates data or records and subsequently retains and stores hard copies should not be subject to the 21 CFR 11 requirements. Far too many systems are being unnecessarily held to the very restrictive portions of 21 CFR 11. Electronic record retention as defined in 21 CFR 11 has its place, but not necessarily in every computerized system used within the industry. 

Association work necessarily involves communication with its members. Those working in this field have many more acquaintances among their peers and with representatives of the pharmaceutical industry. Establishing and maintaining contacts is an important part of this work. Those who enjoy interacting with people will especially enjoy this aspect of association life.
