Essential Ingredients

As constituents of proteins the amino-acids are important constituents of the food of animals. Certain amino-acids can be made in the body from ammonia and non-nitrogenous sources others can be made from other amino-acids, e.g. tyrosine from phenylalanine and cystine from methionine, but many are essential ingredients of the diet. The list of essential amino-acids depends partly on the species. See also peptides and proteins. 

Thus many aspects of statistical mechanics involve techniques appropriate to systems with large N. In this respect, even the non-interacting systems are instructive and lead to non-trivial calculations. The degeneracy fiinction that is considered in this subsection is an essential ingredient of the fonnal and general methods of statistical mechanics. The degeneracy fiinction is often referred to as the density of states. 

For all of the eases eonsidered earlier, a C(t) funetion is subjeeted to Fourier transformation to obtain a speetral lineshape funetion I(co), whieh then provides the essential ingredient for eomputing the net rate of photon absorption. In this Fourier transform proeess, the variable co is assumed to be the frequeney of the eleetromagnetie field experienced by the molecules. The above considerations of Doppler shifting then leads one to realize that the correct functional form to use in converting C(t) to I(co) is ... 

White phosphorus may be made by several methods. By one process, tri-calcium phosphate, the essential ingredient of phosphate rock, is heated in the presence of carbon and silica in an electric furnace or fuel-fired furnace. Elementary phosphorus is liberated as vapor and may be collected under phosphoric acid, an important compound in making super-phosphate fertilizers. 

Phosphorus is also an essential ingredient of all cell protoplasm, nervous tissue, and bones. 

The unsaturated fatty acids, linoleic [60-33-3] and linolenic [463-40-17, contain two and three double bonds and are considered beneficial components of the diet. The double bond is an essential ingredient for human nutrition when it is in the correct position on the fat molecule. Humans are unable to insert the double bond at the omega-3 and -6 position. Therefore, fatty acids containing double bonds at these positions are essential in the diet, including linoleic and linolenic acids. They are accordingly described as essential fatty acids (EFA) (23). 

The catalyst combines two essential ingredients found in eadier catalysts, vanadium oxide and titanium dioxide, which are coated on an inert, nonporous carrier in a layer 0.02- to 2.0-mm thick (13,16). Other elements such as phosphoms are also used. Ring-shaped supports are used instead of spherical supports to give longer catalyst life, less pressure drop though the reactor, and higher yields (17,18). Half rings are even better and allow more catalyst to be loaded (18). 

Kaolin, usually air-floated, is an essential ingredient in continuous filament fiber glass and significant quantities are used in this appHcation (24). 

Although not commonly listed as a weld defect, high-welding stress nevertheless provides an essential ingredient to stress-corrosion cracking and other failures. It differs in an important respect from other types of weld defects in that stresses cannot be visually identified or revealed by conventional nondestructive testing techniques.

Clearly, not all forms of earbon material, nor all the possible applieations thereof, are diseussed in this book. The careful control of electronic properties is, of course, a key motivation of such structural changes the so-called band-gap tuning being a particularly important concern. Efficiency of synthesis and structural homogeneity of the products are essential ingredients of such an approach since failure to achieve e.g. quantitative transformation of precursor polymers or to couple benzene units exclusively in a para-fashion interrupts the extensive -conjugation and hampers a reliable structure-propcrty-relalion.

Ice cream at its simplest is made of milk, sugar, cream, and some flavoring, such as fruit puree or vanilla. An essential ingredient in addition to those is air, without which ice cream would not be the special treat it is. 

Documentation is another essential ingredient in all quality systems. It serves as a mantra for auditors and inspectors that ... if it is not documented it does not exist or it never happened . Consequently, these studies of boranes have led us into many areas, both theoretical and practical.
