Ttese limitations have been overcome by engineering a bacterium, Escherichia coli, with the plant genomic portion of shikimate-synthesizing SPl.l/pKD12.112 (Draths 1999). This technology has also been experimentally enqiloyed for the overproduction of a phytoalexin, salicyclic acid (Chart 12.1), in the tobacco plant. The technique should be applicable also to crops of commercial interest (Verbeme 2000).
