Sources Subject to Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) Sources subject to PSD regulations (40 CFR, Sec. 52.21, Aug. 7, 1980) are major stationary sources and major modifications located in attainment areas and unclassified areas. A major stationaiy source was defined as any source hsted in Table 25-4 with the potential to emit 100 tons per year or more of any pollutant regulated under the Clean Air Act (CAA) or any other source with the potential to emit 250 tons per year or more of any CAA pollutant. Public concerns about air quality led to the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970 to amendments to that act in 1977 and 1990. The 1990 amendments contained seven separate titles covering different regula-toiy programs and include requirements to install more advanced pollution control equipment and make other changes in industrial operations to reduce emissions of air pollutants. The 1990 amendments address sulfur dioxide emissions and acid rain deposition, nitrous oxide emissions, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide emissions, particulate emissions, tail pipe emissions, evaporative emissions, reformulated gasoline, clean-fueled vehicles and fleets, hazardous air pollutants, solid waste incineration, and accidental chemical releases. [Pg.478]

Effective wastewater management in this phase of veneer and plywood production can be accomplished in part by in-plant operational changes and in part by equipment modification. For plants with hot water vats that are heated indirectly with steam coils, the discharge results from spills in loading and unloading the vat and from periodic cleaning. Plants operating in this manner need only to collect the water in small ponds or tanks and reuse it for vat makeup water. Adjustments in pH by the addition of lime or caustic soda may be required to control acidity and prevent the development of corrosion problems. [Pg.362]
