Episode Control

The mechanisms by which a jurisdiction develops its air pollution control strategies and episode control tactics are outlined in Fig. 5-1. Most of the boxes in the figure have already been discussed—sources, pollutant emitted, transport and diffusion, atmospheric chemistry, pollutant half-life, air quality, and air pollution effects. To complete an analysis of the elements of the air pollution system, it is necessary to explain the several boxes not vet discussed. 

The only way to avert this dilemma is for the community to develop and utilize its capability of forecasting the advent and persistence of the stagnation conditions during which an episode occurs and its capability of computing pollution concentration buildup under stagnation conditions. The details of how these forecasts and computations are made are discussed

Currently, the two antiplatelet agents with proven efficacy are aspirin, which inhibits cyclooxygenase -dependent synthesis of thromboxane Aj (TXj ), and ticlopidine, wdrich blocks the ability of ADP to inhibit stimulated adenyl cyclase. Bodi of these drags have proven prophylactic uses in reducing the risk of thrombo -occlusive and thromboembolic complications for all major arterial beds in individuals with a previous history of such episodes. Controlled trials show that both aspirin and ticlopidine are indicated in the secondary prevention of stroke, myocardial induction and peripheral vascular occlusion. However, there are limitations to their efficacy. No net changes in vascular events are seen with primary prevention. Moreover, antiplatelet drugs do not alter thrombocytopenia or impairment... 

As indicated above, national policies and international conventions have been invoked to curb known, and usually obvious, sources of marine pollution. National legislation is used to control coastal discharges of contaminants. A major problem remains owing to the inadequate treatment of sewage prior to emission from land-based sources. The most important deleterious effects in this case are with respect to microbial water quality. This can have a direct influence on bathing criteria and result in beach closures during contamination episodes. An additional problem from land-based sources pertains to transboundary effects, whereby pollution may inadvertently be exported from one country to another. 

The other major aspect of air pollution reduction is the control of shortterm episodes on the urban scale. This aspect is called tactical because, prior to an episode, a scenario of tactical maneuvers must be developed... 

The discovery and development of polypropylene, the one genuinely new large tonnage thermoplastics material developed since World War II, forms part of what is arguably the most important episode in the history of polymer science. For many years it had been recognised that natural polymers were far more regular in their structure than synthetic polymers. Whilst there had been some improvement in controlling molecular architecture, the man-made materials, relative to the natural materials, were structurally crude. 

Antipsychotic medications are indicated in the treatment of acute and chronic psychotic disorders. These include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and manic states occurring as part of a bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder. The co-adminstration of antipsychotic medication with antidepressants has also been shown to increase the remission rate of severe depressive episodes that are accompanied by psychotic symptoms. Antipsychotic medications are frequently used in the management of agitation associated with delirium, dementia, and toxic effects of both prescribed medications (e.g. L-dopa used in Parkinson s disease) and illicit dtugs (e.g. cocaine, amphetamines, andPCP). They are also indicated in the management of tics that result from Gilles de la Tourette s syndrome, and widely used to control the motor and behavioural manifestations of Huntington s disease. 

The nurse must assess the patient for additional evidence of bleeding until the PT is below 1.5 times die control value or until the bleeding episodes cease. The PT generally returns to a safe level within 6 hours of administration of vitamin Kt. Administration of whole blood or plasma may be necessary if severe bleeding occurs because of the delayed onset of vitamin Kx. 

During the forties and fifties, episodes of severe air pollution occurred In a number of urban and Industrial areas. As the scientific and public Information base on the adverse effects of urban air pollution Increased, so did public demand for control measures. As a result, many Industrial countries Introduced comprehensive air pollution control laws at various times from the mid-fifties onwards. Industrial response to these laws led to the application of control techniques which effectively reduced the emissions of some pollutants. However there are other sources and factors which can obscure the benefits of these control actions. For example, consider urban growth. In 1980 there were 35 cities with populations over 4 million. By the year 2000 this number will nearly double to 66, and by the 2025, this number will more than double to an estimated 135 (9). In developing countries, from 1980 to the year 2000, It Is estimated that twice as many people will live In cities of a total population of 1 million or more In Latin America (101 million to 232 million) and East Asia (132 million to 262 million). Three times as many people will live In cities of 1 million or more In South Asia (106 million to 328 million) and four times as many In Africa (36 million to 155 million) (10). Accompanying this rapid growth are Increases In Industrial activity... 

Control rule-1. To achieve fermention of excellent quality, keep (a) the agitation rate in the first scaling episode (growth phase) > 37 units and (b) the duration of the first episode in the air flowrate < 25 h. 

It is suggested that the mode of subduction of the Pacific Plate since the middle Miocene age related to Jackson s episode, hence oscillation of direction of lateral movement of Pacific plate.
