Living wills

On a broader level, our everyday lives have been transformed by science. Yet many people remain deeply suspicious of science and, in particular, of chemistry. I hope that a balanced telling of the dramatic stories of some of the key people in the history of chemistry—people who permanently and irrevocably changed our lives—will help us understand the roots of our modern way of life. [Pg.256]

What to do with the patient who is a long-time user of sedative-hypnotics is often a difficult clinical decision. The most successful treatment approaches seem to be those that are gradual and address the insomnia from a multimodal perspective. Many of the sedative-hypnotics with moderate or longer half-lives will display rebound insomnia on discontinuation and this only complicates the treatment picture. At some point, one has to ask if discontinuing the chronic use of a sedative-hypnotic, in the absence of any harmful effects, is treating the patient or the prescriber. [Pg.274]

All cresol isomers can be rapidly removed from environmental media. The dominant removal mechanism in air appears to be oxidation by hydroxyl radical during the day and nitrate radical at night, with half-lives on the order of a day. In water under aerobic conditions, biodegradation will be the dominant removal mechanism half-lives will be on the order of a day to a week. Under anaerobic conditions, biodegradation should still be important, but half-lives should be on the order of weeks to months. In soil under aerobic conditions, biodegradation is also important, but half-lives are less certain, although probably on the order of a week or less. [Pg.119]

These applications of diamond may seem fantastic. Eventually however, our amazement will fade, and we will take this technology for granted. Our standard of living will have been raised, as will our expectations for what we can achieve by understanding the submicroscopic world. [Pg.609]

The Flax is spun The lifeless is again without Life The living will rule, shaping and using the lifeless The inward will be revealed and the outward hidden The curtain will rise soon and the play commence. I shall petition you once more, and then spin days of eternity."... [Pg.95]

NLFG compounds contain one or more heteroatoms that can react, but they react so slowly over the pH range of 5 to 9 at 25°C that their half-lives will be greater than 50 years, if they react at all. Examples of these compounds include anilines/amines, halogenated aromatics, and ethers. [Pg.348]

Philosophers are not so common as physicians. They are few in number. They possess the secret of curing all maladies. They are not lacking the desire to do good to all the world but this world is so perverse that it is dangerous for them to try it. They would do so, at the risk of their lives. Will they cure some one as by miracle A murmur will be heard among the Physicians and the People and even those who most doubted the existence of the Philosophical Remedy will then suspect that there is such a thing. This man will be followed his actions will be observed the report will spread the avaricious, the ambitious will pursue him to discover his secret. Then, what can he hope for but persecutions, or voluntary exile from his country ... [Pg.19]

These suggestions are compiled with a severe MCS patient in mind. Those with chemical sensitivity who are able to lead relatively normal lives will no doubt need to take fewer precautions. [Pg.145]

We know from all of the discussion of Social Security that our population is aging and that the ratio of workers to retired people is decreasing. That is why we worry about the future solvency of Social Security. But we can consider the broader implications of that change and conclude that if we don t have increases in productivity per worker, the standard of living will decline for everyone. The stock market will drop in value, the dollar will drop in value relative to other currencies, or there will be inflation. Something will happen to cause the average standard of living to decline if we cannot increase productivity per worker. [Pg.39]

The easiest way to solve this problem is to recognize that two half-lives will be needed (5.0 2.5 1.25)... [Pg.127]

Thus, independently of thermodynamically controlled (equilibrium) distribution, exclusively linear polymer can be obtained if kp > kc. In such a system, the consumed monomer is converted practically quantitatively into linear chains, which, if the mechanism is available, i.e., if active species are living, will slowly undergo cyclization until thermodynamically controlled distribution is attained. If, however, polymerization is terminated before significant cyclization occurs, the purely linear polymer will be the product. [Pg.475]

In addition to the fact that most receptors are asymmetric, there are other reasons why. stereoisomers show different biological response.s. Active traasport mechanisms involve asymmetric carrier molecules, which means that there will be preferential binding of one stereoisomer over others. When differences in physical properties exist, the distribution of isomers between body fluids and tissues where the receptors are located will differ. The enzymes responsible for drug metabolism are asymmetric, which means that biological half-lives will differ among possible stereoisomers... [Pg.36]

Previous discussion indicated that for both spent fuel and reprocessed waste, the chief sources of radioactivity for the first 10 to 100 y are the fission products °Sr and Cs. For later times out to 10 y, isotopes of Am, Pu, and Np are successively the dominant contributors to radioactivity. Assuming, as is likely, that corrosion failure of metal-waste packages in a geologic repository will not be significant before 10 to lO y, both Sr and - Cs with 30 y half-lives, will have decayed to insignificance. The actinides and long-lived fission products and Tc remain important at later times (cf. Krauskopf 1988). The U.S. program assumes that 1, Tc, and the actinides and... [Pg.519]

The knowledge of chemistry is highly needed even by these non-science students because if they understand advances in chemistry, the advantages and side effects of chemical industries in their nation their lives will be enriched. [Pg.167]
