The total emissions of hazardous air pollutants from a CGCC plant having wet cleanup are expected to be at least an order of magnitude lower than those achievable from a modem coal-fired steam plant (41). Metals removal in hot-gas cleanup systems is still under development. [Pg.275]

Develop an episode control scenario for a single large coal-fired steam electric generating station. [Pg.71]

Soils from the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and two background sites in southern Idaho had geometric mean nickel concentrations of 11.8-23.4 ppm dry weight concentrations are significantly higher near INEL (Rope et al. 1988). The coal-fired steam plant that was constmcted at the laboratory in 1982-1983 may be responsible for the higher nickel concentrations. [Pg.196]

Spark source (SSMS) and thermal emission (TEMS) mass spectrometry are used to determine ppb to ppm quantities of elements in energy sources such as coal, fuel oil, and gasoline. Toxic metals—cadmium, mercury, lead, and zinc— may be determined by SSMS with an estimated precision of 5%, and metals which ionize thermally may be determined by TEMS with an estimated precision of 1% using the isotope dilution technique. An environmental study of the trace element balance from a coal-fired steam plant was done by SSMS using isotope dilution to determine the toxic metals and a general scan technique for 15 other elements using chemically determined iron as an internal standard. In addition, isotope dilution procedures for the analysis of lead in gasoline and uranium in coal and fly ash by TEMS are presented. [Pg.82]

In the 1980s, fundamental changes took place in the state-owned sector with the so-called privatization of the industry. First in Chile, then in the UK, the assets of the publicly-owned electricity authorities were vested in companies which issued equity shares to the general public. This change in ownership was coupled with a fundamental shift in the way electricity was produced and sold. New, cheaper, technologies such as gas-fired, combined cycle, gas turbine plant, which could be built more quickly than the traditional coal-fired steam turbine plant, and which is less labour intensive in its operation, was introduced extensively in the UK. The separate producers of electricity competed with each other on price (per kWh) to win market share. It is alleged, with some justification in the UK, that such competition has reduced the price to the end-user. [Pg.1000]

Even with an aggressive energy conservation program, the growing population will continue to demand increasing amounts of electricity. Identify and describe the environmental impacts, both positive and negative, of the two means of power generation coal-fired steam boilers and nuclear power. [Pg.718]

A longer-term need is to eliminate unbumed hydroearbon (UHC) and CO2 emissions. Gas turbines aeeount for 20% of U.S. CO2 emissions, whieh is a signifieant fraction of the total current CO2 emissions. This number will increase as natural gas turbines replaee older coal-fired steam generation plants. The use of hydrogen-blended hydrocarbon fuels thus provides both a solution to the immediate need for NOx reduction, and also provides a transition strategy to a carbon free energy system in the future. [Pg.606]

Complete WAO produces a mixture of steam and gas at pressures of hundreds of atmospheres which can be expanded through turbines to give power whereas by heat interchange, pure steam is generated at a somewhat lower pressure. The cost of a WAO plant for power production is competitive with that of a modem coal-fired steam boiler unit, as is also the cost of its operation (24). [Pg.411]

In addition to air, water, and soil pollution, large quantities of solid and liquid wastes generated by both industry and domestic use must be remediated, recycled, or contained. Industrial wastes include overburden and tailings from mining, milling, and refining, as well as residues from coal-fired steam plants and the wastes... [Pg.107]

The electric power industry uses three types of fossil fuel power plants coal-fired steam, gas turbine, and combined cycle power plants. The most common and widely used is the pulverized coal-fired steam power plant. Fuel oil can be used in place of... [Pg.154]

Postcombustion capture In this case, the CO2 is separated from the flue gas emitted after the combustion of fossil fuels (from a standard gas turbine combined cycle or a coal-fired steam power plant). CO2 separation is realized at relatively low temperature, from a gaseous stream at atmospheric pressure, and with low CO2 concentration (ca. 5%-25% when air is used during combustion). SO2, NO2, and O2 may also be present in small amounts. [Pg.84]
