Precaution and Environmental Science. When the precautionary principle is discussed in its relationship to science, it is often portrayed as an antiscience or a risk-management principle that is only used after undergoing conventional scientific processes. As discussed earlier, in practice the limitations of science to characterize complex risks show that precaution is not at odds (Kriebel et al., 2001). Further, precaution is not just about additional safety factors or changing risk assessment default assumptions. Research by U.S. EPA scientists has demonstrated that many of the EPA s Reference Doses - or conservative safe exposures - may correspond to risks of greater than 1 in 1000, meaning that safety factors alone may not protect health (Castorina and Woodruff, 2003). [Pg.49]

The International Chamber of Commerce s (ICC) Business Charter for Sustainable Development (BCSD) was developed by a group of business executives and sets 16 key principles for environmental management. The principles serve as a foundation upon which companies build their own integrated environmental management systems. [Pg.498]

Special Features Company-driven environmental management, based on 16 principles. The Charter is endorsed by more than 2300 companies worldwide, and is recognized as a complement to environmental management systems. Users Major corporations and several industry associations. [Pg.498]

The charter identifies a wide range of principles for environmental management (Table 4.5). As principle 16 is the most relevant with regard to environmental reporting, the full text is given ... [Pg.85]

Some companies have utilised compliance with this ICC charter as part of their verification process for acceptable environmental management. A good example of this can be found in the 1998 CER from Novo Nordisk of Denmark, a supplier of enzymes. This shows (Table 4.6) the progress made on each of the 16 principles by means of a five-step rating system. It is pointed out that attainment of step 5 is by no means an end goal but rather a platform from which stems continuous improvement. [Pg.85]
