Environmental agricultural production

Horticultural appHcations include use of greenhouse thermal screens, rowcrop and turf covers, conveyer belts to process agricultural products, and other similar items. High performance fibers are not normally used in these appHcations, but high strength fibers are preferable for conveyer belts. Environmentally inert low cost fibers such as polypropylene are used for many of the outdoor horticultural appHcations. [Pg.72]

The commercial uses of arsenic compounds in 1988, measured in terms of elemental arsenic, are wood (qv) preservatives, 69% agricultural products (herbicides (qv) and desiccants (qv)), 23% glass (qv), 4% nonferrous alloys and electronics, 2% and animal feed additives and pharmaceuticals (qv), 2% (see Feeds AND feed additives). Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) [11125-95-4] is the most widely used arsenic-based wood preservative. The Environmental Protection Agency has, however, restricted the use of arsenical wood preservatives to certified appHcators. [Pg.332]

The primary appHcation for barrier polymers is food and beverage packaging. Barrier polymers protect food from environmental factors that could compromise both taste and shelf life. They also help retain desirable flavors and aroma. Barrier polymers are also used for packaging medical products, agricultural products, cosmetics, and electronic components and in moldings, pipe, and tubing. [Pg.501]

As farmers increasingly confront declining per capita return arisen from miniaturizing land holdings caused by steadily growing population, they are required to make additional efforts to increase agricultural production. They will thus adopt an agricultural system only when it is both economically and environmentally suitable (Rasul and Thapa 2003). [Pg.30]

We are presently going through a critical phase of conversion in agriculture requiring solutions for reconciling widely differing dimensions, namely, agricultural productivity, farm economic sustainability, environmental protection and social aspects. [Pg.44]

Developed environmental accounting and evaluation methods based on relevant parameters indicating potential impacts on the environment make it possible to describe and monitor processes, states and tendencies of the agricultural production systems at various levels (Hiilsbergen 2003 Piorr 2003 Delbaere and Serradilla 2004 Zinck et al. 2004 Bergstrom et al. 2005 Meyer-Aurich 2005 Payraudeau and van der Werf 2005 Bockstaller et al. 2007). [Pg.116]

The removal of metal ions from waste aqueous solutions is of importance to many countries of the world both environmentally and for water re-use. The application of low-cost sorbents including carbonacceous materials, agricultural products and waste by-products has been investigated [1], Several researchers employing wide variety techniques have attempted removal of metal ions from contaminated water bodies. Majorities of these are adsorption on various surfaces. In recent years, agricultured by products have been widely studied for metal removal from water. These include peat [2], pine bark [3], banana peat [4], peanut shells [5], sawdust [6] and leaves [7]. [Pg.270]

Ethanol is produced as a more environmentally benign fuel. The systematic effect of ethyl alcohol differs from that of methyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is rapidly oxidized in the body to carbon dioxide and water, and in contrast to methyl alcohol no cumulative effect occurs. Ethanol is also a preferred alcohol in the transportation sector compared to methanol because it is derived from agricultural products and is renewable and biologically less objectionable in the enviromnent. [Pg.96]
