Environmental science, materials engineering and forensic science are less obvious professions that involve substantial chemistry. 

When raw materials extraction increases as one of the Four Anthropogenic Societal Activities due to mechanical engineering mining improvements, then production capacity increases, which in times of inflation increases, drive the market price up, and consumption down, also impacting waste entrophy, which in turn requires a mechanical engineering solution.

In one sense, petroleum engineering is an offshoot of mining engineering. Mining of the Earth s resources dates back millennia and has always involved the extraction and preparation of coal, minerals, and metals. Petroleum engineering involves extraction as well, but of oil and gas only, and is a relatively new profession.
