Engineering disciplines mining

How do they depend on neighboring principal disciplines, like chemistry, metallurgy, ceramics and now materials science, and mechanical engineering and mining engineering Neighboring disciplines do compete ... 

This is not to claim that the other engineering disciplines were not commercially oriented. However, with the possible exceptions of mining and aerospace engineering, which are much smaller and less distinct disciplines, the other engineering disciplines were not so closely identified with a single, albeit multi-faceted, industry.
