Water Groundwater can be treated in anaerobic bioreactors that encourage the growth of sulfate reducing bacteria, where the metals are reduced to insoluble sulfides, and concentrated in the sludge. For example, such a system is in use to decontaminate a zinc smelter site in the Netherlands (95). 

Modem cancer therapy has been primarily dependent upon surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy (72) (see Chemotherapeutics,anticancer Hormones Radiopharmaceuticals). Chemotherapeutic agents maybe able to retard the rate of growth, but are unable to eradicate the entire population of neoplastic cells without significant destmction of normal host tissue. This serious side effect limits general use. More recentiy, the immunotherapeutic approach to cancer has involved modification and exploitation of the cellular and molecular mechanisms in host defense, regulation of tissue proliferation, tissue differentiation, and tissue survival. The results have been more than encouraging.

In recent years there has been a rapid growth in the number of combined heat and power (CHP) and combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants, driven mainly by gas turbines using natural gas, sometimes with liquid fuel available as stand-by. Governments have encouraged the construction of these plants, as their efficiency is high and they produce less carbon dioxide than conventional coal and oil-burning power stations. However, they present some hazards, as gas turbines are noisy and are therefore usually enclosed. 

One feature of the new law is an SO, trading allowance program that encourages the use of market-based principles to reduce pollution. Utilities may trade allowances within their system and/or buy or sell allowances to and from other affected sources. For example, plants that emit SO, at a rate below 1.2 Ib/million Btu will be able to increase emissions by 20 percent between a baseline year and the year 2000. Also, bonus allowances will be distributed to accommodate growth by units in states with a statewide average below 0.8 Ib/million Btu. 

The possible employment of beryllium in nuclear engineering and in the aircraft industry has encouraged considerable investigation into its oxidation characteristics. In particular, behaviour in carbon dioxide up to temperatures of 1 000°C has been extensively studied and it has been shown that up to a temperature of 600°C the formation of beryllium oxide follows a parabolic law but with continued exposure break-away oxidation occurs in a similar fashion to that described for zirconium. The presence of moisture in the carbon dioxide enhances the break-away reaction . It has been suggested that film growth proceeds by cation diffusion and that oxidation takes place at the oxide/air interface. ... 

Some corrosion inhibitors can encourage the production of fungal growths in the relatively static cold water in the header tanks of these systems. Biocides will then often need to be included in the inhibitor formulation.
