En-masse

The methods just noted tell something about the physical characteristics of atmospheric particulate matter but nothing about its chemical composition. One can seek this kind of information for either individual particles or all particles en masse. Analysis of particles en masse involves analysis of a mixture of particles of many different compounds. How much of... [Pg.25]

Filter aids as well as flocculants are employed to improve the filtration characteristics of hard-to-filter suspensions. A filter aid is a finely divided solid material, consisting of hard, strong particles that are, en masse, incompressible. The most common filter aids are applied as an admix to the suspension. These include diatomaceous earth, expanded perlite, Solkafloc, fly ash, or carbon. Filter aids build up a porous, permeable, and rigid lattice structure that retains solid particles and allows the liquid to pass through. These materials are applied in small quantities in clarification or in cases where compressible solids have the potential to foul the filter medium. [Pg.106]

There is a wide range of pneumatic, vibratory, belt or en-masse type elevators and conveyors for transfer of coal from storage to boiler. The final scheme depends on site layout constraints and cost. [Pg.188]

The corresponding bulk flow of A must be CA/CB times that of B, since bulk flow implies that the gas moves en masse. [Pg.578]

Alternately, consumer products could be shipped en masse to distribution centers located near the population centers. From here they would be shipped by truck to individual customers. This type of facility has sales advantages. The retailer can be guaranteed that his order will be delivered within 24 hours after its receipt. This allows him to provide excellent customer service with a small warehouse. These centers could receive bulk quantities, but then each one would have to package the product. This would mean a duplication of packaging facilities. [Pg.27]

Area Sources. Sources that are so numerous and emit so little that patterns of concentration are analyzed only en masse. Such souces include both stationary (e.g., home chimneys) and mobile (e.g., automobiles) types. Emission rates per unit area are estimated emission modes are not addressed. [Pg.75]

Many of the morphological and biochemical changes that occur in cells that die by necrosis are very different from those that occur in apoptosis. During necrosis cells swell, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum lose their structure and become dysfunctional and the nuclear membrane becomes disrupted (Fig. 35-1). Necrotic death is independent of premitochondrial apoptotic proteins such as Bax, cytochrome c release and caspase activation. Necrosis is further distinguished from apoptosis by the fact that necrosis usually occurs as the result of a traumatic physical injury or stroke and cells die en masse, whereas apoptosis typically occurs in individual cells within a population of surviving neighbors. [Pg.604]

Certain roses are less suited to organic gardening than others. Bush roses, such as the hybrid tea and floribunda (cluster-flowered) types, dislike competition at root level and so are often grown as a monocrop in a rose bed. They reguire ample spacing, dislike underplanting, and due to the fact they are grown en masse, tend to be more susceptible to pest and disease outbreaks. [Pg.168]

Blue asbestos, blue cape asbestos Categorical and trade names for crocidolite-as-bestos, which has a pale blue, lavender, or bluish green color en masse. Blue asbestos was a synonym for crocidolite in mineralogy before the term was adopted in the trade. [Pg.193]

White asbestos Categorical term used primarily for processed chrysotile. Chrysotile en masse has a golden color. [Pg.197]

Refineries generate a large amount of hazardous wastes. As a result, they have been hit hard by environmental regulations and unfavorable public opinion, and Congress mandated in 1984 that refineries minimize waste [79]. In California, refiners turned to waste minimization, or pollution prevention, en masse in 1991 when the state s Source Reduction and Hazardous Waste... [Pg.301]

In the search for environmentally benign chemicals that might deter birds such as starlings, crows, or pigeons from roosting en masse, spices and herbs such as rosemary, cumin, and thyme look promising. In some experiments, the birds feet were immersed in oil extracts of the spices. Starlings also avoided perches treated with starch mixes of (R)-limonene, (S)-limonene, (3-pinene, or methiocarb. The first three occur in rosemaiy, cumin, and thyme (Clark, 1997). [Pg.396]
