High future growth in emerging markets, e.g. Asia... 

Globalization as shown increase of world trade driven by emerging markets especially in Asia is a main trend not only in the chemical industry (Laudicina 2004). Besides managing global material flows, companies face new markets with suppliers, customers, but also new competitors from emerging markets. 

The globalization is a key trend in the chemical industry especially between traditional industry markets in Europe and NAFTA and emerging markets in Asia. Planning and managing these flows is a further area, where value chain planning can provide significant decision support to overall volume and value optimization. 

It is not surprising that the giant boom in telecommunications at the end of the last century did contribute to the development and commercialisation of lO-software tools, massively. Various software companies have been founded which did enter an emerging market, and at R D facilities and institutes lots of proprietary, (and casually freeware) tools have been established.

The above discussion provides the context for 3-D batteries. That is, there are a variety of small power applications, typified by MEMS devices, which the most advanced, 2-D lithium battery systems are unable to satisfy. The inability to provide sufficient power is because of configuration and not because of intrinsic energy density. Three-dimensional designs offer the opportunity to achieve milliwatt-hour energies in cubic millimeter packages and, more importantly, with square millimeter footprints. While such power sources may not influence the enormous commercial markets in cell phones and laptop computers, they are certain to impact emerging markets where... 

The emerging markets require low-cost and environmentally compatible vehicles. 

LED due to the direct bandgap of the Ill-nitrides. However, due to the lack of a native substrate for GaN, sapphire or SiC substrates were and are still used. The biggest use of semiconductor-grade SiC is still for LEDs, but now it serves the role as the substrate for the active GaN layer rather than both the substrate and the active layer. Today there are high-freqnency metal-semiconductor-field effect transistors (MES-EETs) offered commercially, as well as an emerging market for Schottky diodes made from SiC. We are still at the beginning of the SiC revolution, however, and the material s full potential has yet to be realized.

Its growth is close to GDP, the minimum rate to maintain significance as an industry over time. However, there is significant growth potential in the emerging markets, particularly China and South East Asia. 

This shift in regional demand will accelerate as customer industries such as textiles, electronics, and automotive vehicles keep moving to emerging markets to take advantage of the low labor costs and the proximity to their customer base. 

Specialty chemicals producers must find an answer to the exodus of customers to emerging markets, which not only threatens to break up established supplier-customer relationships, but has the potential to destabilize entire segments. This is particularly true for formulation-based segments such as admixture chemicals for the concrete industry, which depend on close interaction with customers. What happened to textile dyes in Europe is just one particularly striking example the migration of the European textile industry to Asia and subsequent emergence... 

As numerous customer industries are migrating to emerging markets in Asia and Eastern Europe, new low-cost competitors are arising from these areas.
