Electronic source citation

Any source—whether it s a book, a multivolume series, an article, or an electronic source—can be documented using this form of citation. For example, if you are citing a web article by a specific author, simply list the author s name and the page or paragraph... 

Again, this same format holds true for electronic sources. When listing an author or editor of an online article simply alphabetize his or her name (last name first, etc.). Use the same procedure for multiple authors or editors. After you have done this, list the title of the article you consulted (in quotation marks), the journal in which it was published (underline the title), and instead of the publishing company, list the website and the year the site was posted. In other words, your bibliographic citation should look like this ...

The purpose of citations for electronic sources is the same as that for printed matter identification of the source and the best way to locate it. All citations basically name the author and the work and present publication information. Citations for various types of electronic sources, however, must also include different kinds of additional information—such as network addresses—to help researchers locate the sources in the easiest way. 

It s important to remember, too, that forms of electronic sources continue to change rapidly. As technology expands, new ways of documenting electronic sources are being created, but, as yet, there is no universally acknowledged citation standard. The problem is further complicated by the fact that some sources will not supply all the information you might like to include in your citation. In these cases, you simply have to do the best you can by citing what is available. 

APA s recommendations for citing electronic sources have changed since the most recent edition of the Publication Manual was printed. The following brief guidelines are suggested in an American Psychological Association Web site (see the last sample entry in this section for a complete citation, including the URL). ... 

The author collected available publications by means of Internet-based research at Medline, Current Contents and CiteSeer to produce a broad overview in the field of clinical applications of computer-aided diagnosis in the breast. PC-Based Information Products Floppy Disk Based. We currently have ready access to a rapidly growing variety of relevant information resources. From a current awareness perspective, an excellent source of weekly information is the floppy disk-based product called Current Contents on Diskette (CCOD). Several versions are available however, the Life Sciences version is most appropriate for this review because of its coverage, on a weekly basis, of over 1200 journals describing work in the biological sciences. One will note that the product has several useful features, including very quick retrieval of article citations as well as several output options (including either hard copy or electronic storage of references as well as reprint requests).

Use of Multiple Dates Because online sources may change or be revised, a citation may contain more than one date. Your citation may present, for example, the original date of a document if it appeared previously in print form, the date of its electronic publication, or the time of its latest update. Your entry should also include a date of access, indicating the day you found the particular source. 

A number of periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) and periodically revised reference books are published in print and on CD-ROM as databases. These citations may contain the following author s name (if given), title of the work, publication information for the printed source, title of the database (underlined), publication medium (CD-ROM), name of the vendor (the supplier of the information), and electronic publication date. 

Online Sources. In addition to the information provided in the previous examples (author, title, publication source, page numbers), these citations require the medium (online), the computer network (e.g., Internet), date, and electronic address (the URL). 

Medhne MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is a bibhographic database. It contains more than 16 million references to journal articles starting from 1949 till present. All the records in MEDLINE are indexed with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). MEDLINE is a part of PubMed and covers the subjects of biomedicine and health, chemical sciences, bioengineering, etc. MEDLINE is the primary component of PubMed (http //pubmed.gov) a link to PubMed is found on the National Library of Medicine (NLM) home page at http // www.nlm.nih.gov. The result of a MEDLINE/PubMed search is a list of citations (including authors, tide, source, and often an abstract) to journal articles and an indication of free electronic full-text availability. 

The literature of Electron Spin Resonance has been surveyed from 1964 to 1975 inclusive abstraction ceased at the end of December, 1976.
