Elastomers trade names

Terpolymers in which the acrylate monomer is the major component are useful as ethylene-acrylate elastomers (trade name Vamac) [Hagman and Crary, 1985]. A small amount of an alkenoic acid is present to introduce sites (C=C) for subsequent crosslinking via reaction with primary diamines (Sec. 9-2d). These elastomers have excellent oil resistance and stability over a wide temperature range (—50 to 200°C). They are superior to nitrile and chloroprene rubbers. Although not superior to silicone and fluorocarbon elastomers, they are less costly uses include automotive (hydraulic system seals, hoses) and wire and cable insulation. [Pg.531]

It is estimated that 27,000 t/yr of CSM have been commercially used in the United States. However, due to environmental problems in the manufacturing process, it has been necessary to develop a process that is much mote expensive. As a result many companies using CSM ate trying to replace the CSM with CPE or other elastomers. The result is a decline in the usage of this polymer. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene is sold under the trade name Hypalon (DuPont—Dow Company). [Pg.233]

The late 1950s saw the emergence of cast elastomers, which led to the development of reaction injection mol ding (RIM) at Bayer AG in Leverkusen, Germany, in 1964 (see Plastics processing). Also, thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) and Spandex fibers (see Fibers, elastomeric) were introduced during this time. In addition, urethane-based synthetic leather (see Leather-LIKEmaterials) was introduced by Du Pont under the trade name Corfam in 1963. [Pg.341]

Many random copolymers have found commercial use as elastomers and plastics. For example, SBR (62), poly(butadiene- (9-styrene) [9003-55-8] has become the largest volume synthetic mbber. It can be prepared ia emulsion by use of free-radical initiators, such as K2S20g or Fe /ROOH (eq. 18), or in solution by use of alkyl lithium initiators. Emulsion SBR copolymers are produced under trade names by such companies as American Synthetic Rubber (ASPC), Armtek, B. F. Goodrich (Ameripool), and Goodyear (PHoflex) solution SBR is manufactured by Firestone (Stereon). The total U.S. production of SBR in 1990 was 581,000 t (63). [Pg.184]

Highly saturated nitrile elastomers (HSN) have become available. These mbbers are prepared by (nearly complete) hydrogenation of the nitrile mbber copolymer. The resulting product has better heat and oxidation resistance than conventional nitrile mbber but still retains some double bonds for vulcanization. Trade names for HSN are Zetpol (Nippon Zeon), Therbar (Bayer), and Tormac (Polysar). HSN has been used, and is being developed, for oil field chemical, automotive, power station, aerospace, military, and industrial appHcations (66). [Pg.184]

The trans-1,4 configuration predominates but there are also small amounts of the three other isomeric stmctures, ie, cis-1,4, -1,2, and -3,4. It was one of the first synthetic mbbers produced in the United States as early as 1931, by the Du Pont Co., because of its good solvent resistance. Its Du Pont trade name is neoprene. Polysulfides. The polysulftde elastomer, best known under the trade name Thiokol, represents the earliest commercially developed synthetic mbber, developed ia 1930 by J. C. Patrick as a highly solvent and age-resistant elastomer (15). It is stiH considered the most solvent-resistant mbber, but its poor mechanical properties provide a serious disadvantage (see Polymers containing sulfur). [Pg.471]

Proportion of Hard Segments. As expected, the modulus of styrenic block copolymers increases with the proportion of the hard polystyrene segments. The tensile behavior of otherwise similar block copolymers with a wide range of polystyrene contents shows a family of stress—strain curves (4,7,8). As the styrene content is increased, the products change from very weak, soft, mbbedike materials to strong elastomers, then to leathery materials, and finally to hard glassy thermoplastics. The latter have been commercialized as clear, high impact polystyrenes under the trade name K-Resin (39) (Phillips Petroleum Co.). Other types of thermoplastic elastomers show similar behavior that is, as the ratio of the hard to soft phase is increased, the product in turn becomes harder. [Pg.13]

Nitrile rubber (NBR) was first commercialized by I.G. Farbindustry, Germany, in 1937, under the trade name of Buna N. Its excellent balance of properties confers it an important position in the elastomer series. Nitrile rubber, a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, is widely used as an oil-resistant rubber. The acrylonitrile content decides the ultimate properties of the elastomer. In spite of possessing a favorable combination of physical properties, there has been a continuous demand to improve the aging resistance of NBR due to the tougher requirements of industrial and automotive applications. [Pg.555]

Molded urethanes are used in items such as bumpers, steering wheels, instrument panels, and body panels. Elastomers from polyurethanes are characterized by toughness and resistance to oils, oxidation, and abrasion. They are produced using short-chain polyols such as polytetram-ethylene glycol from 1,4-butanediol. Polyurethanes are also used to produce fibers. Polyurethane multiblock copolymers of the type described by Eqs. 2-197 and 2-198 constitute an important segment of the commercial polyurethane market. The annual global production is about 250 million pounds. These polyurethanes are referred to as thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) (trade names Estane, Texin). They are among a broader group of elastomeric block copolymers referred to as thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). Crosslinking is a requirement to obtain the resilience associated with a rubber. The presence of a crosslinked network prevents polymer chains from irreversibly slipping past one another on deformation and allows for rapid and complete recovery from deformation. [Pg.142]
