Environmental Effects of Plasticizers. Measurement of the effect of phthalates on environmental species is difficult because standard test methods are not designed to deal with poorly water-soluble substances. Eor this reason a number of early studies are flawed and their results should be disregarded in favor of more recent investigations where these difficulties have been overcome. [Pg.132]

The effect of plasticizers and temperature on the permeabiUty of small molecules in a typical vinyUdene chloride copolymer has been studied thoroughly. The oxygen permeabiUty doubles with the addition of about 1.7 parts per hundred resin (phr) of common plasticizers, or a temperature increase of 8°C (91). The effects of temperature and plasticizer on the permeabiUty are shown in Figure 4. The moisture (water) vapor transmission rate (MVTR or WVTR) doubles with the addition of about 3.5 phr of common plasticizers (92). The dependence of the WVTR on temperature is a Htde more comphcated. WVTR is commonly reported at a constant difference in relative humidity and not at a constant partial pressure difference. WVTR is a mixed term that increases with increasing temperature because both the fundamental permeabiUty and the fundamental partial pressure at constant relative humidity increase. Carbon dioxide permeabiUty doubles with the addition of about 1.8 phr of common plasticizers, or a temperature increase of 7°C (93). [Pg.435]

In some cases, plasticization of a PSA may be detrimental to its performance. A well-known example is the deterioration of the performance of an adhesive applied to plasticized PVC. Migration of the plasticizer from the flexible vinyl into the PSA often softens the adhesive to the point where it fails cohesively from the vinyl, leaving sticky residue behind during removal of the adhesive-coated article from the substrate. One way to address this detrimental effect of plasticizer migration is to formulate an already plasticized PSA, perhaps because a better balance exists between the plasticizer in the PVC substrate and the PSA in contact with it [101]. [Pg.502]

In the preparation and processing of ionomers, plasticizers may be added to reduce viscosity at elevated temperatures and to permit easier processing. These plasticizers have an effect, as well, on the mechanical properties, both in the rubbery state and in the glassy state these effects depend on the composition of the ionomer, the polar or nonpolar nature of the plasticizer and on the concentration. Many studies have been carried out on plasticized ionomers and on the influence of plasticizer on viscoelastic and relaxation behavior and a review of this subject has been given 119]. Sometimes, the relationship between two variables is obscured by the presence of a third variable which may of may not be related to the other two. Machinists have learned through experience, and are certainly well aware, that machining plastics is profitable. While machining plastics is not particularly burdensome, there are specific considerations that must be followed when machining plastics. Because plastics have a much lower deflection temperature than metals if too great a heat build up is allowed, the plastic may tend to gum tooling. Plasticization is the process in which the plasticizer molecules neutralize the secondary valence bonds, known as van der Waal s force between the polymer molecules. It increases the mobility of the polymer chains and reduces the crystallinity.
