In 1990, North Carolina produced 60% of the total scrap mica the remainder was produced in Connecticut, Georgia, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and South Dakota. In 1991, the five largest producers produced 67% of the nation s total output (Table 9) (15). 

A number of processes have been used to produce carbon black including the oil-furnace, impingement (channel), lampblack, and the thermal decomposition of natural gas and acetjiene (3). These processes produce different grades of carbon and are referred to by the process by which they are made, eg, oil-furnace black, lampblack, thermal black, acetylene black, and channel-type impingement black. A small amount of by-product carbon from the manufacture of synthesis gas from Hquid hydrocarbons has found appHcations in electrically conductive compositions. The different grades from the various processes have certain unique characteristics, but it is now possible to produce reasonable approximations of most of these grades by the od-fumace process. Since over 95% of the total output of carbon black is produced by the od-fumace process, this article emphasizes this process.

Make Useful Coproducts. The success of this approach to process development is heavily dependent on the market situation but in suitable cases where there is market demand for the total output of both products such processes can be successful. Examples here are the coproduction of phenol and acetone, which is essentially noncatalytic, and the more recently developed process for the cooxidation of ethyl benzene and propylene to produce propylene oxide and styrene. 

Photo flash bombs and cartridges are pyro technic items which are classified with bombs (Vol 2, B229) because of their explosive effect. The various devices are similar, differing principally in size and the amount of delay. When fired, each photo flash cartridge, after 1, 2, or 4 seconds, produces a flash having a peak intensity of approx 50 million cd with a total output of 5 million cd sec, whereas photoflash bombs generate above 5 x 109 cd... 

The role of plastics in municipal solid waste combustion is discussed, and in particular, their fuel characteristics. Details are given of a state-of-art municipal solid waste combustor and the effects of plastics on the different combustion stages. In addition, the contribution of plastics to the total output spread over the various emission paths of solids, liquids and gases, is also assessed.
