CTD data processing requires a computer. In some computer languages, graphical editors are available or easy to write which assist in manual editing and determining of the editing parameters.

When the first edition of Chemistry of Petrochemical Processes was written, the intention was to introduce to the users a simplified approach to a diversified subject dealing with the chemistry and technology of various petroleum and petrochemical process. Semiautomatic devices suited for preparative purposes are the CAMAG Linomat 5, the Desaga HPTLC applicator AS 30, and the Alltech TLC sample streaker. For all devices, the syringe has to be filled manually with sample solution and rinsed after sample application. NMR interpretation has made significant advances with diffusion-editing pulse sequences and two-dimensional inversion of diffusivity and T2 relaxation [7,40-44]. The 2D inversion can also be used to compare Tj and T2 relaxation with each other [42]. Distributions of these two characteristic parameters can now be displayed on a 2D map and the relationship between them more easily visually interpreted. The 2D distribution map can be interpreted by comparing the measured distribution with the line for the bulk diffusivity of water and the correlation lines for the hydrocarbon components in crude oils, shown in Figure 3.6.10 as dashed lines [40-46]. Before we start a simulation, choose Parameters under the Simulation pull-down menu to select the time of simulation. If we are using the XY Graph, we need to double-click its icon and edit its parameters to make the time information consistent.

Our specimen database also contains additional parameters that are used to control the data collection process and to provide archival information to each data file written by the collection process. The console display for editing the specimen database is of the "fill in the form" type and the user revises the parameters for each specimen position (including the zeroth) as required. New parameter values are checked for validity at the time they are entered. All other parameters retain the values they possessed during the previous set of analyses. Thus, only minor changes are needed to program for a set of samples similar to the previous ones. All records in the database can be cleared if the analytical conditions are markedly different. 

The updating function for the run database is another editing program that is used to create an entry in the run database for each data collection task in a batch. The run database entry contains optional descriptive information as well as the parameters required to drive the task. The user edits the parameter values to suit his needs for the tasks to be performed. Parameters in the run database are validated before the run entry is made permanent.
