Dyspeptic complaints

The clinical part of the study was conducted with participation of 116 adolescent patients aged from 10 to 18 years hospitalized by the Department of Pediatrics for examination and treatment of chronic dyspeptic complaints. The control group comprised 38 age matched healthy volunteers. The Regional Research Ethics Committee of Ukraine approved the study. 

T raditionally, milk thistle fruits have been used for disorders of the liver, spleen, and gall bladder, such as jaundice and gall bladder colic. Milk thistle has also been used for nursing mothers for stimulating milk production, as a bitter tonic, for hemorrhoids, for dyspeptic complaints, and as a demulcent in catarrh and pleurisy. It is stated to possess hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and choleretic properties (128). Current interest is focused on the hepatoprotective activity of milk thistle and its use for the treatment of liver, spleen, and gall bladder disorders (129). Recently it has been shown that silibinin reduced prostate-specific antigen levels in prostate carcinoma cells lines, indicating a possible role of silibinin in human prostate cancer (130,131).

Use B. p. are used in medicine as a stomachic or gastric tonic in cases of loss of appetite and dyspeptic complaints. Other uses are in the production of alcoholic drinks (bitters, various aperitifs) and soft drinks (tonic water, bitter lemon, bitter orange, etc.). The formation of B. p. plays an important role in the production of beer and cheese.

Girosital was administered to 33 men with long-standing alcohol abuse, twice daily for 3 months. It significantly reduced serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein and increased the level of HDL-cholesterin it was particularly effective for the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia types 11b and IV. Liver lesions relating to alcohol intoxication improved and subjective complaints such as dyspeptic symptoms and pain were reduced (Konstantinova et al., 1988).
