Gastric complaints

TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL USES India. Decoction of dried seeds is taken orally for diarrhea " " and as a demul-cent . Seeds are taken externally as an emollient poultice, for constipations, and for gastric complaints " . 

Golden Seal has proved itself to be a very valuable remedy in digestive disorders and in debilitated conditions of mucous membranes. Its use is indicated in various gastric complaints, and it may be taken with advantage by most dyspeptics in doses of 10 grains of the powdered root. 

Correct choice = D. Acetaminophen does not antagonize the uricosuric agent probenecid and therefore may be used in patients with gout. Acetaminophen has little anti-inflammatory effect, but has analgesic and antipyretic activities equal to those of aspirin. It is the analgesic-antipyretic of choice for children with viral infections aspirin can increase the risk for Reye s syndrome in children. Acetaminophen is a suitable substitute for the analgesic and antipyretic effects of aspirin in those patients with gastric complaints. 

Development of the pediatric ear infection drug, NE-1530, was terminated based on a phase II clinical trial data in which NE-1530 showed no significant benefit compared with placebo (40). Another candidate, NE-0080, was being evaluated as a treatment for stomach ulcers and other gastric complaints caused by the bacterium Helicobacterpylori,but after phase I trial indicated the safety (41), no further information became available. 

From placebo-controlled studies, side effects of bromelain appear to be few and of low incidence (e.g., 1.8% incidence of allergic reactions, occasional gastric complaints, diarrhea, and nausea). ... 

Orally administered verapamil is well tolerated by most patients. Most complaints are of constipation and gastric discomfort. Other complaints include vertigo, headache, nervousness, and pruritus. 

Gastrointestinal complaints, including severe vomiting and pain, with depressed gastric acid secretion in response to insulin and gastrin. As with the development of ulcers in deficient animals, this may reflect hypersensitivity to glucocorticoid stimulation. 

Before administration Assess patient s pain, including the type, duration, severity, frequency, and location. Assess GI complaints. Assess mental status. Assess fluid and electrolyte imbalances, including intake and output. Assess gastric pH (greater than 5 is desired), BUN and creatinine. Assess drug history report probably drug-drug interactions. 

The most common adverse effects of NSAIDs involve the gastrointestinal tract. Minor complaints (nausea, dyspepsia, anorexia, and abdominal pain) are common (up to 60% of patients). Serious GI complications associated with NSAIDs including perforations, gastric outlet obstruction, and GI bleeding, occur in 1.5% to 4% of patients per year.

In half of the patients with complaints dinical signs manifest in the first 2 years of life. Ulceration occurs only in those that contain ectopic gastric mucosa and thus is rare, but can cause occult fecal blood or frank blood in stool and anemia. Adhesions and formation of scar tissue can lead to obstructive ileus. The diverticulum can act as a lead point for ileocolic or ileoileal intussusception. 

Use B. p. are used in medicine as a stomachic or gastric tonic in cases of loss of appetite and dyspeptic complaints. Other uses are in the production of alcoholic drinks (bitters, various aperitifs) and soft drinks (tonic water, bitter lemon, bitter orange, etc.). The formation of B. p. plays an important role in the production of beer and cheese. 

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of two formulations of diosmin 600 mg/day or 300 mg bd for 28 days in 255 premenopausal women with so-called heavy legs syndrome in the absence of venous thrombosis, varicose veins, or superficial or deep vein reflux, two withdrew because of adverse reactions (headache and gastric pain) and 20 had gastrointestinal complaints [24 ].
