The chemical drying of printing inks involves oxidation (where unsaturated oils are cross-linked by atmospheric oxygen) or polymerization of binder constituents by UV light. The first setting is often by striking in, even with chemically-dried printing inks. [Pg.171]

There are four principal classes of printing ink, which vary considerably in physical appearance, composition, method of appHcation, and drying mechanism. These also fall into two general types of consistency or viscosity, paste and Hquid. The classes are letter press and Hthographic (Utho) inks, which are called paste inks, and flexographic (flexo) and rotogravure (gravure) inks, which are called Hquid inks (1). [Pg.247]

Humectants and low vapor pressure cosolvents are added to inhibit drying of ink in the no22les. Surfactants or cosolvents that lower surface tension are added to promote absorption of ink vehicle by the paper and to prevent bleed. For improvements in durabiUty, additional materials such as film-forming polymers have been added. Ink developments are providing ink-jet prints with improved lightfastness, waterfastness, and durabiUty. Direct Printing. This is the simplest technique and accounts for the majority of printed fabrics. In this style the print paste is apphed directiy onto the fabric which can either be white or already dyed with a pale ground shade. Each color requires its own print paste and appHcation and each color is printed immediately after each other without intermediate drying. [Pg.373]

Stoddard solvent is a petroleum distillate widely used as a dry-cleaning solvent and as a general cleaner and degreaser.
