Driver choice

Larsen, L. 1995. Factors Affecting Drivers Choice of Speed. Madrid lAAP Symposium. [Pg.58]

A recent example of a modem driver assist study that demonstrates behavioural adaptation is one that shows drivers choice of short headway distances between cars used in automated platoon driving (Skottke, 2007). In this driving simulator study, Skottke (2007) compared drivers time headway to a lead vehicle before and after driving in a platoon and consistently found that drivers maintained the short time headway experienced in the platoon when returning to the post-platoon, free-driving condition. The result was replicated in follow-up studies and it was also found that drivers appeared not to be consciously aware that they were driving with shorter... [Pg.103]

In a series of studies that we conducted in Israel we looked at drivers choices of safe and comfortable headways, tiieir ability to verbally and non-verbally estimate headways, the relationship between the headways drivers keep and their skills, their ability to improve their judgments, and the potential for feedback devices as learning tools to increase headways. The following is a brief description of these studies and their results. [Pg.157]

Sam Peltzman s methodological approach differs from the technological approach in that he focuses on human behavior especially driver choice. He begins with an individual benefit-cost framework to traffic safety and combines with it findings from other safety studies to construct counterfactual estimates of traffic fatality rates, hypothetical rates which would have occurred without a national traffic safety policy. We will examine his study in some detail because most of the studies are similar m crucial aspects and hence we can examine other studies more quickly. Peltzman s study is pivotal in that it was one of the first comprehensive evaluative studies. It reintroduced human behavior into traffic safety thinking. [Pg.56]

Samples are most frequently shock deformed under laboratory conditions utilizing either explosive or gun-launched flyer (driver) plates. Given sufficient lateral extent and assembly thickness, a sample may be shocked in a onedimensional strain manner such that the sample experiences concurrently uniaxial-strain loading and unloading. Based on the reproducibility of projectile launch velocity and impact planarity, convenience of use, and ability to perform controlled oblique impact (such as for pressure-shear studies) guns have become the method of choice for many material equation-of-state and shock-recovery studies [21], [22]. [Pg.194]

Selecting the SMPS controller IC. The important factors within this application that affect the choice of switching power supply controller IC are MOSFET driver needed (totem-pole driver), single-ended output, 50 percent duty cycle limit desired, and current-mode control desired. The popular industry choice that meets these needs is the UC3845B. [Pg.117]

Driver. If steam is available, a common choice is a steam turbine driver for the main pump and an electric motor for standby. Some plants prefer two electric motor-driven pumps. Give the minimum steam condition. Give the expected voltage drop on the electric system if more than 10% is expected, especially on large systems. [Pg.449]

API again offers some help. API 671 covers the special purpose coupling as either a specification or guideline. It has been common practice for the compressor vendor to furnish the couplings. Most compressor vendors have no problem accepting this responsibility, while driver vendors sometimes prefer not to furnish them. In some compressor types, the coupling style will be somewhat influenced by the user. When torsionals become a major consideration, the vendor may have to make the choice based on system need. In all cases, the user should establish his right of approval if the vendor performs the selection. [Pg.451]

The choice of drivers also depends entirely on the particular refinery utilities simation. Drivers range from electric motors, gas engines, and steam mrbines in general use, to gas turbines in special high horsepower service (5-10,000 H.P. per machine). [Pg.92]

The sample eapsule is plaeed in a tight-fitting 4340 steel fixture that serves to support the eopper eapsule. Pressure from the detonation of the explosive is transmitted to the eopper eapsule through a mild steel driver plate. This plate is also lapped optically flat on both surfaces. The mild steel acts to shape the pressure pulse due to the 13 GPa structural phase transition. With proper choice of the diameter of the driver plate and beveled interior opening of the steel fixture, shock deformation of the driver plate acts to seal the capsule within the fixture. [Pg.152]

The toughness of a material is a design driver in many structures subjected to impact loading. For those materials that must function under a wide range of temperatures, the temperature dependence of the various material properties is often of primary concern. Other structures are subjected to wear or corrosion, so the resistance of a material to those attacks is an important part of the material choice. Thermal and electrical conductivity can be design drivers for some applications, so materials with proper ranges of behavior for those factors must be chosen. Similarly, the acoustical and thermal insulation characteristics of materials often dictate the choice of materials. [Pg.390]

Once the required horsepower and number of stages are estimated, a choice of compressor type can be made from the considerations included earlier. Some example selections are included in Table 10-1, The selections listed in this table are meant as common types that would normally be specified for the given conditions. It must be emphasized that the.se are not recommendations that should be accepted without consideration of the advantages and disadvantages listed earlier. In addition, local foundation conditions, type of drivers available, cost of fuel, availability of spaie... [Pg.271]

Imagine a perfect world. What does perfect mean to you Get as detailed as possible. Aside from the requisite world peace and clean environment, think about the day-to-day things that would make a difference to you. Would every coffee maker have a pause and serve feature Would the Dave Matthews Band perform free concerts at your school every Saturday Would everyone in your state, upon getting their driver s license, be given the car of their choice ... [Pg.19]

Conclusion with regard to stock of hypotheses and model Due to the complex multitude of products, the trade and distribution may affect the choice of alternatives in each case by means of user information. ( Influence of trade and distribution - Hypothesis 12). The high disposal costs exercise iimova-tive pressure to reduce volumes of cooling lubricants (Hypothesis Cost internalisation ). Some ingredients of cooling lubricants were the subject of public discussions (e.g. formaldehyde, chlorinated paraffins) ( Emotional drivers -Hypothesis 4). [Pg.82]

Choice b is the best answer. For their safety and the safety of others, firefighters stand outside in the street and on the sidewalk to warn motorists and pedestrians that the truck is in motion. The firefighter standing inside the firehouse helps to guide the truck s driver as the truck backs into the station. [Pg.195]
