Downsizing

For passenger car seating about 90% is made by the molded foam process. The transportation market has expedenced a decline since 1979 due to decreased automotive production and also because U.S. cars have been downsized, resulting in the use of less polyurethane foam per car. 

Ozone Generator Design. A better understanding of discharge physics and the chemistry of ozone formation has led to improvements in power density, efficiency, and ozone concentration, initiating a trend toward downsizing. 

Low Flow Operation. The optimum operation of a pump is near the best efficiency point. Some manufacturers curves indicate the minimum allowable continuous stable flow (MCSF) limits for every pump (43). In the 1980s, the processing industry experienced a reduction in flow requirement as a result of business downturn and installation capacity downsizing. The pumping equipment, however, was generally not replaced by smaller pumps, but was forced to operate at reduced flow rates, often below allowable MCSF. This has resulted in increased failure rates and reduced pump component life. 

Uranium hexafluoride [7783-81-5], UF, is an extremely corrosive, colorless, crystalline soHd, which sublimes with ease at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The complex can be obtained by multiple routes, ie, fluorination of UF [10049-14-6] with F2, oxidation of UF with O2, or fluorination of UO [1344-58-7] by F2. The hexafluoride is monomeric in nature having an octahedral geometry. UF is soluble in H2O, CCl and other chlorinated hydrocarbons, is insoluble in CS2, and decomposes in alcohols and ethers. The importance of UF in isotopic enrichment and the subsequent apphcations of uranium metal cannot be overstated. The U.S. government has approximately 500,000 t of UF stockpiled for enrichment or quick conversion into nuclear weapons had the need arisen (57). With the change in pohtical tides and the downsizing of the nation s nuclear arsenal, debates over releasing the stockpiles for use in the production of fuel for civiUan nuclear reactors continue. 

After the mid-1970s, the downsizing of North American vehicles and the introduction of front wheel drive vehicles brought about the widespread usage of a new class of friction materials (4) called semimetallics, also called semimets and carbon—metaUics. Because of the allegedly adverse health effects associated with asbestos [1332-21 -4] (qv) fibers, a second new class of friction materials called nonasbestos organics (NAOs) came about (5). Such materials are called either asbestos-free or nonasbestos friction materials (2). 

Experienced operators at the toller site leave due to retirement, downsizing or other factors. 

Shodex has a wide variety of columns for organic GPC using organic solvents. The columns are packed with porous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer gels especially developed for GPC use. Five types of standard-size GPC columns packed with different solvents are available. Downsized GPC columns are also available. 

Figure 6.5 shows a chromatogram of Epikote 1004 using the KE-600 series and SYSTEM-24H (a newly developed GPC system used with the KF-600 series for full utilization of the efficiency of the downsized columns). Compared with conventional-sized columns such as the KF-800 series, the time of analysis is shortened to one-half and the chromatographie resolution is improved.

If possible, collaborate with research departments of local universities on publishable work, even if that requires working outside of business hours. Publication builds training and morale. It is also a way of ensuring that junior analysts will have proof of their accomplishments in the event of corporate reorganization, restructuring, or downsizing. 

Some of the challenges facing the industrial laboratory are limited resources, cost containment, productivity, timeliness of test results, chemical safety, spent chemicals disposal, technician capability, analytical capability, disappearing skills, and reliability of test results. The present R D climate in the chemical industry is one of downsizing at corporate level (lean and mean), erosion of boundaries between basic and applied science, and polymer science and analytical chemistry as Cinderella subjects. Difficult chemical analyses are often run by insufficiently skilled workers (a managerial issue). 

In the conventional NMR system used in chemical analyses, downsizing of the spectrometer alone may not be appealing, unless other parts of the system, such as a superconducting magnet, a power amplifier, etc., are also miniaturized. On the other hand, the small-sized spectrometer would find interest in various unconventional scenes. In this section, we show examples of such. 

NEBUS appeared in 1997 and showed the fuel cell downsizing done by Ballard. It has ten of the company s 25-kilowatt fuel cell stacks in its rear compartment. It is a functional city bus, with a comparable range. It is similar but not identical to the buses Ballard has put on the streets of Vancouver and Chicago. 

The FCX-V2 used a Honda designed fuel cell and reformer. Downsizing the methanol reformer remained to be done and both test cars had room only for a driver and passenger. Fuel cell components took up the rear seats. The need to test fuel cell cars under real-life conditions is one reason Honda joined DaimlerChrysler in the California Fuel Cell Partnership. More recently Honda announced the first lease of its advanced... 

This experience is usually passed on from older to younger workers over time. However, when downsizing or streamlining programs results in many of these experienced people leaving an organization at once (e.g., to take advantage of early retirement incentives), a gap in the company memory can be created. 

The approach of Kataoka et al. [54] shows some desirable features, such as downsized, in vivo relevant volumes, and low complexity of the device and thus low error proneness. However, the device lacks the possibility to add complete dosage forms and the use of compendial dissolution devices would be a more robust approach.
