Doctorate degrees chemistry

Rowland Pettit (1927-19811 was born in Port Lincoln, Australia. He received two doctoral degrees, one from the University of Adelaide in 1952 and the second from the University of London in 1956, working with Michael Dewar. He then became professor of chemistry at the University of Texas, Austin (1957-1981). [Pg.524]

With the experimental results accumulated during his stay in Berlin, Garcia Gonzalez prepared two doctoral dissertations, entitled New Crystalline Phosphoric Esters of o-Fructose and Tests on Some Assumed Phases of Alcoholic Fermentation, which he presented in order to receive his doctorates in Chemistry and in Pharmacy, respectively, at the University of Madrid in 1932. Armed with these two degrees, he decided to pursue an academic career in his own country. His early training in a provincial... [Pg.9]

Dr. Spiller received his first doctorate in chemistry from the University of Milan (Italy), and later a Master s degree and a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. He did additional studies at the Stanford University School of Medicine at Stanford, California. He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, and a member of many professional nutrition societies. [Pg.6]

Carothers reached a milestone in his career on May 19, 1924, when he defended his thesis and received his Ph.D. At the age of 28, he was older than most recent Ph.D. s, but the chemistry faculty considered him one of the most brilliant students ever to be awarded a doctoral degree at Illinois. [Pg.116]

Kipping, a Manchester native, studied with Roscoe and Schorlemmer, then spent a year (1886) in Munich at Adolf von Baeyer s laboratory where Perkin, Jr., was Privatdozent and von Baeyer s assistant. Kipping completed his London doctoral degree in 1887 and was Armstrong s assistant from 1890 to 1897. See Partington, A History of Chemistry, IV 851. And Robert Robinson, Memoirs, 2223. [Pg.194]

Statistics, particularly those on the status of early African American Ph.D. recipients in chemistry must be viewed with caution - for reasons other than the number of African Americans who passed as members of other racial/ethnic groups. For example, Greene (1946) asserts that at least 36 African Americans held doctorates in chemistry before 1944. However, an examination of his enumeration reveals that he identifies 37 African American doctorate recipients. Of these, two were identified as having specialties in chemistry and education. Thus, it is unclear whether these degrees were awarded in science or education. Elsewhere, Ferguson (1949) contends that by 1949, an estimated 55 African Americans held doctorates in chemistry. Because Ferguson does not discuss the source of his data, it is unclear how that figure was derived. [Pg.16]

With respect to research specialties, the largest proportion of interviewees concentrated in organic chemistry, followed by physical chemistry (Table 3.6). Few concentrated in analytical chemistry. There were some cohort differences. For example, organic chemistry dominated the specialties in Cohorts I (before 1955), III (1965-1974), and IV (1975-1984) while both organic chemistry and physical chemistry led Cohort II (1955-1964) and physical chemistry was the leading specialty of those earning doctorates in Cohort V (1985-1995). The cohort distribution of specialties is consistent with annual ACS survey data. In 2002, U.S. institutions awarded approximately 1,822 doctoral degrees in chemistry. Of... [Pg.72]

Joseph J. Breen was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on July 22, 1942. He earned his bachelor s degree from Fairfield University in 1964 and his doctorate in chemistry from Duke University in 1972. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and for two years in the Peace Corps before accepting an appointment at the EPA in 1979. During his tenure at the EPA, Breen was also an adjunct professor in environmental chemistry at Hood College, in Frederick, Maryland, and at Trinity College and American University in Washington, D.C. [Pg.182]

An interesting account and references to van t Hoff s early work can be found in The Reception of J. H. van t Hoff s Theory of the Asymmetric Carbon by H. A. M. Snelders, J. Chem. Educ. 51, 2 (1974). A century has passed since van t Hoff first published his theory, which he did-before he obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Utrecht, van t Hoff was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1901) for his later work in thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. [Pg.119]

D. Ronald Webb Right, if you look at Hispanic and African American combined, there were about 90 doctorate degrees in chemistry awarded to these two minority groups in 2000. These numbers are very low. [Pg.13]
