Robert Bunsen was the son of a professor of modem languages at Gottingen, and was bom in that city on March 3.1, 1811. After attending the academy at Holzminden he entered the University of Gottingen, and studied chemistry under Professor Friedrich Stromeyer. At the age of twenty years he received his degree of doctor of philosophy. This does not mean that Bunsen was precocious, for, as Wilhelm Ostwald explains, students graduated at a much earlier age then than they do now. [Pg.624]

The final result was announced. In spite of his dissertation, he was grudgingly awarded his degree, and as a laurel wreath was placed on his head, a cannon outside boomed the advent of another doctor of philosophy. The award, however, was in reality a veiled condemnation of his theory. His dissertation... [Pg.143]

Work done at a master s level is often called a thesis. Work toward the Ph.D. (doctor of philosophy) may be called a thesis or a dissertation, depending on the policy of the degree-granting institution. In May 1938, Sam received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry. The title of his doctoral dissertation is Studies in Artificial Radioactivity. It has three sections (i) One involves fimdamental physics of iodine and neutrons, (ii) The second section concerned chemical reaction rates using radioactive iron, (iii) The third and longest section used radioactive tracers to study a fundamental problem in biology. It involved stomach-feeding radioactive phosphorus to rats, and after an elapsed period of time he killed the rats to determine which organs of the body had taken up the radioactivity. Ruben published six articles from his thesis research. [Pg.107]

In 1901, he obtained his degree of Doctor of Philosophy, summa cum laude, a crowning conclusion of a venture started and carried through with great tenacity in spite of many obstacles and hardships.
