Asacoi is a pH-dependent-release preparation that delivers drug to the distal small bowel and colon. The response of ulcerative colitis to this formulation appears to be identical to that seen with sulfasalazine. Systemic administration of colonic carcinogois yields the entire spectrum of changes seen in human colon cancer, including abnormal crypt architecture with disrupted proliferation, papillary and adenomatous polyps, carcinoma in situ, and adenocarcinoma (Thumherr et al., 1973). The effectiveness of 5-ASA therapy depends in part on achieving high drug concentration at the site of active disease.
