A defective CFTR channel will disturb electrochemical gradients in both intestinal crypt cells and pancreatic epithelial cells, with a common end resutt, namely the inability to secrete water into the lumen. In crypt cells, chloride is normally transported to the lumen, drawing sodium ions across the tight junctions and creating an osmotic potential that in mrn draws water into the lumen (Figure 4.11). Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride. l-(3-Cyano-3,3-diphenylpropyl)-4-phenyl-4-piperidinecarboxyhc acidmonohydrochlorhydrate [3810-80-8] (Lomotil) (13) is a white, odorless, crystalline powder that melts at 220—226°C. It is soluble ia methanol, spariagly soluble ia ethanol and acetone, slightly soluble ia water and isopropyl alcohol, freely soluble ia chloroform, and practically iasoluble ia ether and hexane. The method of preparation for diphenoxylate hydrochloride is available (11). Diphenoxylate hydrochloride [3810-80-8] (13) is an antidiarrheal that acts through an opiate receptor. It has effects both on propulsive motility and intestinal secretion. Commercial forms are mixed with atropiae to discourage abuse. [Pg.203]

Processing conditions are closely guarded trade secrets, but manufacturer s Hterature provides some information. The seaweed is extracted with hot water at slightly alkaline pH. Nontraditional Hormones. Novel hormones identified ia cardiovascular tissue have profound effects on maintenance of blood pressure and blood volume ia mammals. Atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH) is a polypeptide hormone secreted from the atria of the heart. When the cardiac atrium is stretched by increased blood volume, secretion of ANH is stimulated ANH ia turn increases salt and water excretion and reduces blood pressure (6). Endothelin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by endothehal cells throughout the vasculature. Metformin. Metformin [657-24-9] (1,1-dimethylbiguanide), mol wt 129.17, forms crystals from propanol, mp 218—220°C, and is soluble in water and 95% ethanol, but practically insoluble in ether and chloroform. Metformin, an investigational dmg in the United States, does not increase basal or meal-stimulated insulin secretion. It lowers blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic patients with Type II diabetes but has no effect on blood glucose levels in normal subjects. It does not cause hypoglycemia. Successful metformin therapy usually is associated with no or some weight loss. [Pg.342]

Methods for isolation of the product polycarbonate remain trade secrets. Feasible methods for polymer isolation include antisolvent precipitation, removal of solvent in boiling water, spray drying, and melt devolatization using a wiped film evaporator. Regardless of the technique, the polymer must be isolated dry, to avoid hydrolysis, and essentially be devoid of methylene chloride. Most polycarbonate is extmded, at which point stabiUzers and colors may be added, and sold as pellets. [Pg.283]

Kidney Function. Prostanoids influence a variety of kidney functions including renal blood flow, secretion of renin, glomerular filtration rate, and salt and water excretion. They do not have a critical role in modulating normal kidney function but play an important role when the kidney is under stress. Eor example, PGE2 and -I2 are renal vasodilators (70,71) and both are released as a result of various vasoconstrictor stimuli. They thus counterbalance the vasoconstrictor effects of the stimulus and prevent renal ischemia. The renal side effects of NSAIDS are primarily observed when normal kidney function is compromised. [Pg.155]

Natural resins are generally described as solid or semisolid amorphous, fusible, organic substances that are formed in plant secretions. They are usually transparent or translucent yeUow-to-brown colored, and are soluble in organic solvents but not in water. The principal uses for natural resins are in varnishes, printing inks, adhesives, paper size, and polymer compositions. The term natural resins includes tree and plant exudates, fossil resins, mined resins, and shellac. They often have been altered from their original state during isolation and processing. For some appHcations, the resins have been chemically modified to increase their industrial utiUty. [Pg.138]

Bde salts, cholesterol, phosphoHpids, and other minor components are secreted by the Hver. Bile salts serve three significant physiological functions. The hydrophilic carboxylate group, which is attached via an alkyl chain to the hydrophobic steroid skeleton, allows the bile salts to form water-soluble micelles with cholesterol and phosphoHpids in the bile. These micelles assist in the solvation of cholesterol. By solvating cholesterol, bile salts contribute to the homeostatic regulation of the amount of cholesterol in the whole body. Bile salts are also necessary for the intestinal absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins (24—26). [Pg.415]

Inhibin and Activin. Inhibin, a water-soluble, gonadal factor known for over 50 years to inhibit pituitary function, has been isolated and identified (127—130). Inhibin is a glycoprotein hormone that preferentially inhibits the secretion of FSH. It consists of an a-chain subunit, mol wt 14,000, linked by disulfide bonds to a P-chain subunit, mol wt 18,000. There exist two forms of the P-chain subunit, P-A and P-B. The smaller subunit combines with either the P-A or P-B subunit to form inhibin-A or inhibin-B, respectively. [Pg.123]

Fiber components are the principal energy source for colonic bacteria with a further contribution from digestive tract mucosal polysaccharides. Rate of fermentation varies with the chemical nature of the fiber components. Short-chain fatty acids generated by bacterial action are partiaUy absorbed through the colon waU and provide a supplementary energy source to the host. Therefore, dietary fiber is partiaUy caloric. The short-chain fatty acids also promote reabsorption of sodium and water from the colon and stimulate colonic blood flow and pancreatic secretions. Butyrate has added health benefits. Butyric acid is the preferred energy source for the colonocytes and has been shown to promote normal colonic epitheUal ceU differentiation. Butyric acid may inhibit colonic polyps and tumors. The relationships of intestinal microflora to health and disease have been reviewed (10). [Pg.70]

Slime layers are a mixture of bacterial secretions called extracellular polymers, other metabolic products, bacteria, gases, detritus, and water. Commonly, 99% of the slime layer is water, although much silt and debris may also become entrapped in it. [Pg.123]

Slime is a network of secreted strands (extracellular polymers) intermixed with bacteria, water, gases, and extraneous matter. Slime layers occlude surfaces—the biological mat tends to form on and stick to surfaces. Surface shielding is further accelerated by the gathering of dirt, silt, sand, and other materials into the layer. Slime layers produce a stagnant zone next to surfaces that retards convective oxygen transport and increases diffusion distances. These properties naturally promote oxygen concentration cell formation. [Pg.124]
