Injection of botulinum toxin A at the site of problematic tics is sometimes helpful. Treatment of any associated attention deficit disorder (eg, with clonidine patch, guanfacine, pemoline, methylphenidate, or dextroamphetamine) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or clomipramine) may be required. Bilateral thalamic stimulation is sometimes worthwhile in otherwise intractable cases.

Micellar structure has been a subject of much discussion [104]. Early proposals for spherical [159] and lamellar [160] micelles may both have merit. A schematic of a spherical micelle and a unilamellar vesicle is shown in Fig. Xni-11. In addition to the most common spherical micelles, scattering and microscopy experiments have shown the existence of rodlike [161, 162], disklike [163], threadlike [132] and even quadmple-helix [164] structures. Lattice models (see Fig. XIII-12) by Leermakers and Scheutjens have confirmed and characterized the properties of spherical and membrane like micelles [165]. Similar analyses exist for micelles formed by diblock copolymers in a selective solvent [166]. Other shapes proposed include ellipsoidal [167] and a sphere-to-cylinder transition [168]. Fluorescence depolarization and NMR studies both point to a rather fluid micellar core consistent with the disorder implied by Fig. Xm-12. 

The bulk stmcture of the catalyticaHy active phase is not completely known and is under debate in the Hterature (125,131—133). The central point of controversy is whether (Valone or in combination with other phases is the most catalyticaHy active for the conversion of butane to maleic anhydride. The heart of this issue concerns the role of stmctural disorder in the bulk and how it arises in the catalyst (125,134,135). Most researchers agree that the catalysts with the highest activity and selectivity ate composed mainly of (Vthat exhibits a clustered or distorted platelet morphology (125). It is also generaHy acknowledged that during operation of the catalyst, the bulk oxidation state of the vanadium in the catalyst remains very close to the +4 valence state (125). 

Beginning in the 1960s, ben2odia2epiae anxiolytics and hypnotics rapidly became the standard prescription dmg treatment. In the 1980s, buspkone [36505-84-7] (3), which acts as a partial agonist at the serotonin [50-67-9] (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) type lA receptor, was approved as treatment for generali2ed anxiety. More recently, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been approved for therapy of panic disorder and obsessive—compulsive behavior. 

Treatment of Major Depression. Dmgs commonly used for the treatment of depressive disorders can be classified heuristicaHy iato two main categories first-generation antidepressants with the tricycHc antidepressants (TCAs) and the irreversible, nonselective monoamine—oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, and second-generation antidepressants with the atypical antidepressants, the reversible inhibitors of monoamine—oxidase A (RIMAs), and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Table 4 fists the available antidepressants. 

Glassification of Substance-Related Disorders. The DSM-IV classification system (1) divides substance-related disorders into two categories (/) substance use disorders, ie, abuse and dependence and (2) substance-induced disorders, intoxication, withdrawal, delirium, persisting dementia, persisting amnestic disorder, psychotic disorder, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, and sleep disorder. The different classes of substances addressed herein are alcohol, amphetamines, caffeine, caimabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, nicotine, opioids, phencyclidine, sedatives, hypnotics or anxiolytics, polysubstance, and others. On the basis of their significant socioeconomic impact, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, and opioids have been selected for discussion herein. 

The odd harmonics (non-multiples of 3), generated by hexaphase rectifiers, are more severe than any other harmonic disorders present in the system, except LT systems, where third harmonics too are pronounced. An LT system and the devices connected on it must take cognisance of these effects and suitable measures be taken, either to diminish such effects or to select higher ratings of the devices to operate on such systems without overloading. HT systems must take particular cognizance of odd harmonics. 

It is, however, advisable to conduct a harmonic study of the system to select a more appropriate size of reactor, panicularly where the installation is expected to experience high harmonic disorders.

Solid state NMR is a relatively recent spectroscopic technique that can be used to uniquely identify and quantitate crystalline phases in bulk materials and at surfaces and interfaces. While NMR resembles X-ray diffraction in this capacity, it has the additional advantage of being element-selective and inherently quantitative. Since the signal observed is a direct reflection of the local environment of the element under smdy, NMR can also provide structural insights on a molecularlevel. Thus, information about coordination numbers, local symmetry, and internuclear bond distances is readily available. This feature is particularly usefrd in the structural analysis of highly disordered, amorphous, and compositionally complex systems, where diffraction techniques and other spectroscopies (IR, Raman, EXAFS) often fail. 

There are many applications for diamonds and related materials, e.g., diamondlike carbon films, and there are potential applications for Fullerenes and carbon nanotubes that have not yet been realised. However, the great majority of engineering carbons, including most of those described in this book, have graphitic microstructures or disordered graphitic microstructures. Typical magnetoconductance data for the individual MWCNT are shown in Fig. 4. At low temperature, reproducible aperiodic fluctuations appear in the magnetoconduclance. The positions of the peaks and the valleys with respect to magnetic field are temperature independent. In Fig. 5, we present the temperature dependence of the peak-to-peak amplitude of the conductance fluctuations for three selected peaks (see Fig. 4) as well as the rms amplitude of the fluctuations, rms[AG]. It may be seen that the fiuctuations have constant amplitudes at low temperature, which decrease slowly with increasing temperature following a weak power law at higher temperature. The turnover in the temperature dependence of the conductance fluctuations occurs at a critical temperature Tc = 0.3 K which, in contrast to the values discussed above, is independent of the magnetic field. This behaviour was found to be consistent with a quantum transport effect of universal character, the universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) [25,26]. UCFs were previously observed in mesoscopic weakly disordered...
