Diligence

Biomatenals scientists have worked diligently to synthesize polymeric stmctures which exhibit biocompatibiUty and long-term biostabiUty. Devices made from these polymers are intended to be implanted in the body for years, and in some cases decades. 

Hair colorants, the fourth class of color additives, may be used only to color scalp hair and may not be used in the area of the eye. Use of these colorants is exempt, that is, coal-tar hair dyes may be sold with cautionary labeling, directions for preliminary (patch) testing, and restrictions against use in or near the eye. The EDA diligently enforces the rules governing color additives and limits the use of, or even dehsts colorants deemed unsafe. The Hst of substances specifically prohibited for use in cosmetics is short. 

As microprocessor-based controls displaced hardwired electronic and pneumatic controls, the impac t on plant safety has definitely been positive. When automated procedures replace manual procedures for routine operations, the probability of human errors leading to hazardous situations is lowered. The enhanced capability for presenting information to the process operators in a timely manner and in the most meaningful form increases the operator s awareness of the current conditions in the process. Process operators are expected to exercise due diligence in the supervision of the process, and timely recognition of an abnormal situation reduces the likelihood that the situation will progress to the hazardous state. Figure 8-88 depicts the layers of safety protection in a typical chemical jdant.

Equipment instructions must be properly and promptly filed. A separate file should be set up for each piece of equipment and should include the smallest note packed with it. A lack of such files is an invitation to future problems. In one instance, a strip chart recorder that had not been used for several years seemed just right for a procedure but needed some minor repairs and parts. After a couple of hours of diligent search, the instruction book was finally found tucked away in a drawer. It could easily have been missed. In other less fortunate cases, it took time-consuming correspondence with the manufacturers to produce information that should have been immediately available in the file cabinet.
